I am going to be hunting some new land this upcoming fall and was wandering if On X maps is the best app to use to make sure you are on the right property. Also is it a one time pay or do you have to pay for it every year.

Love OnX and you have to renew each year.

It's good at lines not so much current owners name...and yes yearly dues

If you’ll watch camofire, it will come on sale for 40% off about once a month. It was just on their Friday

I have On X for the state of Alabama, About $30 a year. Just automatically renewed in February. I use it for property lines and researching owners on small parcels. Works for me.

Huntstand app is free and just as good as far as an app goes. You can also select up to 10 free parcels to make as property boundary.

I’ve used both. I like HuntStand. More free features I think. Or there were when I switched

Don't blame me for your bad decision-

HuntStand is 25 dollars a year for the entire US. If you hunt out of state much, I believe it to be the better choice.

Agreed with TJ. I’ve hunted CO and WY a good bit and the game wardens use OnX for property lines/trespassing. I think Huntstand has some info (mostly weather data) that seems nice but I prefer OnX. Also, OnX seems to work better when you’re out of cell coverage once you learn to save the maps.

I use On X.
I like the fact I can use it without cell coverage, as I guess it uses GPS?

I waited until I got the discount before signing up. There is a free 7 day trial as well usually.

I had landglide, but it was more expensive, and I like On X better.

God Bless,
David B.

You can down load maps , then go off line when you don't have service . It pulls off satellites and works like a GPS. Handy , up in the hills and hollers of Hillbilly land.

Gives name and sometimes it gives address to wherever tax notices go...i havnt figured out why it's just on some parcels and not all...but my grandad has bought 2 or 3 properties in the last 6 years and it hasn't updated with his name

If you're relying on anything for navigating, get the onX chip and a GPS. The GPS is more reliable (precise) and it uses less battery power.

On X is good but, the land owners are not always up to date. It requires your phone, and eats the battery that could be used later for an emergency or other communication. On X can be used without a cell signal IF you downloaded the map for the area you're in, if not, you're out of luck. That's another reason the GPS is the route to go.

I've had the Huntstand App on my phone twice. Total time about 30 minutes before I deleted it lol.

You can get the chip and put in a handheld gps. That way you don't have to buy every year.

x2

I've got apps on my phone that I piddle with when around the house, but when I'm in the mountains, I have my Garmin with OnX card in it.

As for the gps's location reliability- I went to mark some of our property line the other day. I followed my gps to 2 different corners of the property. Both times the gps corners matched the corner markers that I found. I was impressed. I always knew it to be accurate, but it was dead on.

I like onX, however the land lines around my property are off about 100 yards North to South. I just purchased a piece of ground that joins some current owned land and a neighboring place and the surveyed corner and the map are good E/W but off a considerable amount N/S. May not be this way on all of it, but in my general area it is. Another item is my wife grandmother's place in the same area isn't even on her own land per OnX, however she's owned it since the late 60's with deeds ad descriptions backing it. This isn't a naming issue, because "her" land is listed, adjacent to this lot on the map. Her's is about 30 acres, and the adjacent piece is near 200.

All that said, I still think it's a pretty good platform for navigating in the woods.

OnX is great for bouncing around between Public/Private land and making sure you're where you're supposed to be. If you're staying on a specific property where you know the boundaries (like a hunting club or your own land), and just want to be able to drop pins for different things, I like Hunt Stand better. Plus, Hunt Stand is free.

I got a free year of OnX last year from someone that had a promo code, and I liked it, but not enough to pay for it. Even the public land spots I hunt are well within the public land boundaries, so there's no chance of me accidentally wandering onto private land. So, the main thing I use the app for is to drop pins for cameras, sign found during scouting, etc. and Hunt Stand does perfectly well at those things

OnX maps worth every penny when hunting out of state public land. I bet locals hate it. I also really like the line distance feature and being able to determine the acreage of marked parcels. Most green fields are about 2/3 the size people think.
