I’ve never seen one until this year in Illinois.... had a wad of 25 hens/jake poults and 6 of the hens had long beards

The first turkey my boy killed was a bearded hen. Her beard and our ignorance got her killed.

My first bird was a bearded hen as well because I was young, by myself and thought a beard meant gobbler. 9.5” beard

I used to have one on the place I hunt. She drug five different longbeards past me to their deaths. I loved that little hen for a long time but didn’t see her last year. Coyotes or a bobcat probably crapped her out somewhere.

Years ago I was guiding a guy that shot one when it came in with 2 Jake's. In his defense it was pretty brushy and it did have the longest beard. Once on the ground he had no idea that it was a hen. I started asking him if he noticed anything was off...and he didn't. I probably could have not told him and wouldn't have been the wiser (for a while).

Same guy missed 5 longbeards on that trip in 4 days. Had him pattern his gun after the 1st 2 misses and he could shoot the hell out of paper. I was filming 3 of the misses and kept one if the videos for years just to laugh at how far he was off (shot like 2 feet under the bird). After the 5th miss the owner told me that he punched his last ticket and to keep him away from birds the last day. He thought I was a terrible guide and complained about how I couldn't get him a bird. None of the birds were over 40 yards.

Guess he deserved that hen.
