Glad he’s alive. If I would have been in that car, it would smelled really awful by the time it stopped rolling. Just saying.

haleyville al,
I remember my uncle hitting the wall in his dirt car. He hit the wall then got hit and went on top of the wall then hit in the driver door. Maybe going 30mph when hit in the driver door just solid. The cage was bent over his lap and took a lock to his ribs. It took a while for him to get over it. He had bruised ribs but his inside took a beating and that bothered him more than anything. I couldn’t imagine at the speed these guys run.

I’m so glad he’s alive. I saw the replay and just knew that lick on driver’s side was fatal. Just makes you wonder how a man can survive a wreck like that but Dale dies in a wreck that IMO isn’t nearly as bad. I wonder what Schrader saw in that car that made him react like he did. Must have been just awful.

Earnhardt wore an open faced helmet and it would have been very easy to see that he was dead. From what I’ve heard, he was bleeding from his ears, nose and mouth. The impact severed his spinal cord from the base of his brain.

Earnhardt was forced to ditch the open faced helmet, which he did. NASCAR banned all open faced helmets.

Not senior. He was wearing an open face helmet when he died.

Nope. Here's a link to an article about the wreck, his lap belt and his open face helmet.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I stand corrected, I really thought nascar had outlawed the open faced helmet.

Glad Flyin Ryan made it through. Looked terrible. Dale's wreck looked like nothing compared the that one last night. He was wearing an open face helmet. His neck broke on impact. That's when the Hans device was just coming out. Drivers are required to wear one now.

what ultimately killed DE is that his car went from 190(ish) mph to 0 mph in an instant. A full-face helmet wouldn't have made a difference other than not bashing his face against the wheel, but that isn't what killed him. A hans device probably wouldn't have even helped. When your forward momentum goes from 190 to 0 all at once, there's not much that's going to help.

So true. My good friend drag car took a sharp left turn at 130mph and hit a wall. The damage to his skull (sinus eye sockets) was shocking. He was out of work for a long time too.

And his seatbelt broke, making his chin go into the steering wheel, which I had no clue about until the article someone posted above. So between the seat belt and the open face helmet, he could have otherwise survived that crash.

I was racing up in Nashville one time and got hooked in the left rear going down the front stretch. I smoked the inside wall running wide open which was about 120 or so mph. That was the hardest hit I’ve ever had while racing and thank god I had a HANS device on. My belts literally stretched and my chest hit the steering wheel. I shoved the steering column and the pedals through the firewall. The motor was sitting almost beside me. When you have that sudden stop like Dale did it’s very dangerous

I read somewhere that Earnhardt had some bones in his neck fused together several months before his crash. They said this did not help what happened.

Consider what happened to you with the belts and your body stretching like that, doing 120ish.

Now think about Stanley Smith hitting the wall at Talladega (when Spencer went over the wall between T1-2), or Neil or Dale hitting the wall, with none of them wearing a Hans neck device or today's harness. Or having the Safer barriers. And wearing open-face helmets.

Glad you were able to survive your crash, johndeere. Sounds horrible.
