I’ve inherited a rifle that I’m not sure what it is. It says Oct. 11 1897 on top of barrel but caliber isn’t stamped anywhere. Very long octagon barrel that is at least 40 caliber. I’m guessing 45-70?

Yeah I was first thinking Marlin didn't make a rifle that early but they did. They started making a 38/55 and 45/70 in 1881.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

Marlin Model 1897. Some of the rarer engraved models have sold for big money over the years.
AU7MM08’s post about trying a snap cap isn’t a bad idea at all to determine what its chambered in.

It has *Marlin Safety* in big letters on top of receiver. This thing is very old. It have a serial number? I would take it to a gunsmith and let them confirm/figure it out and give the gun a look over to confirm it's in firable shape. A gunsmith bill is better than the possibility of a blown-up gun and you injured.

Could be a 38 WCF or 38/55. I'll bet it's a 38/55 but a gunsmith is your best safe bet.

I think I was wrong with my earlier post. October 11, 1887 is the patent date for the Marlin Model 93 which would fit the serial # search date of 1893. Are you sure it says 1897 and not 1887?

It actually says Oct 2 1887 and I’m thinking it’s a model 1893. I found one on gun broker that looked real close. The magazine tube is the length of the barrel 28 in.
