I’ve used a drown set and killed one but have had 3 others pull free. Using MB 550s open jaw. What trap do y’all recommend?
Thanks

I cant see how anything pulled out of a 550 unless it was a toe catch and that could happen with offset jaws
Maybe go with 4 coils if youre using the 2 coil. They'll fire faster and give you more consistent full pad catches

Hard to beat a conibear330 imo if set up properly, but if they do get trap shy a snare set up with lure works great. Of course you have to check those more often and dispatch them yourself.

MB 550 isn't big enough for beaver unless you're making an absolute perfect front foot catch every time. Offset jaws on an already undersized trap are a definite no.

If you want to catch and hold beaver buy some beaver traps.

I use a Sleepy Creek 4.5 double long spring with a drowner for beaver. The #4.5 has a 7 1/2" jaw spread, substantially wider that a 550 at 4 3/4".

That's a fine trap! I've got a couple that I welded 4"x 4" pan covers on and they are catching machines. Easy to bed rock solid with those springs but man they're tough to set!

You're not kidding! I have to stand on the springs.
