Off topic but figured I'd ask. My 18 year old son will be starting college soon and we're checking out the different types of student loans. I know next to nothing about these. He has no scholorships or anything like that. I've checked out a 11.375% Sallie Mae loan but wondering if there's another plan with lower APR? Or is 11-12% about normal? Thank you in advance. - Jim

Holy hell. My student loans were 3.X-4.X% I would suggest he do two years at a community college and then transfer to a 4year.
Student loan debt is financially strangling a lot of young adults.

What’s he wanting to major in? this is key. Yup if i had it to do over I'd took a specific trade...business degrees n such r a dime a dozen...anything short of doctor lawyer engineer I wouldn't even go if it was me...hell i wish I hadn't gone now but I was fortunate to not have to pay for it so I went anyway

What’s he wanting to major in? This^^^ My youngest didn't go to college (Even though he had a partial scholarship.) and instead self studied and got a Network+ certification and then got a CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and he just accepted a job for $63k a year. He's just 2 months into his 22nd birthday. Wrap your head around that.

US Armed forces or 2 yr college. Way too many adults getting suckered in by their kids to go to their dream college just to flunk out or run up massive debt that most will never re-coop. 2yr nursing degree = $60-$100,00/yr

USAF, odds of an enlisted seeing combat slim. However, I think the shortest enlistment is four years compared to two year enlistments for the other big three. Have him check with the coast guard, that might be a fun ride and get a few benefits to boot. Student loans suck , especially to the ones on the hook.
