So my buddy invited me to hunt this past Saturday. I had tracked a deer Friday night early into Saturday morning and was reluctant to even go but he had a good one coming out in daylight. The short g2 8 point. I decided to get a few hours of sleep and hunt with him. I get into the stand and immediately start seeing deer. Young bucks chasing does and a really nice mature 6 point but it wasn't the one in was there for. My buddy texts me about 9am and said hes got to go cook breakfast for for his boys at the camp. I told him I was gonna hunt until about 10am. Well at 905 I heard a truck on the county road, I wasn't far off from where I was sitting and didn't think much until it started slowing down, then BOOM!!! I immediately text him and say get up here someone just shot from the road. I get out stand and we start heading down the road, then my buddy spots the white belly in some pines. And guess what it was the buck in was there for shot in the a$$. We camped out in the woods for a while hoping they would come back for their "trophy", a truck did come by real slow but must have seen us and hauled ass before we could get a tag number. The game warden was called but without a tag number to go on nothing really could be done. We at least got the buck before they could. Sucks to cause he was a good one 27in main beams and 20in wide with 5.75 in bases.

That's just plain ol friggin sorry. Heck of a deer.

Scum of the earth. But on this site you will actually find some that brag about poaching! Hate it for you. Wish you had caught them and beat the hell out of them! What county did it happen in?

I’ve never have and never will understand the mindset of a poacher. To me with that kind of mentality I wouldn’t put anything past them that involved criminal activity of any sort.

Hate that! Can't stand poachers. I know the feeling though, happened to me in December one shot from the road on my place.

it's a violation of a regulation, calling it poaching is a stretch. If you leave yer license at home accidentally and get a ticket for no license in possession...are you a poacher??? My take, yer milage may vary

During the rut too. When bucks are roaming well outside thier home ranges and no longer homebodies to a particular piece of property. Lottery type odds IMO. Dano is certainly a very unlucky guy in this case.

Not Fred....... but poaching is by definition stealing the use of somebody else’s land and the critters that live on it. If you believe all the game animals actually do belong to the state then I suppose you could call a gamecheck violation poaching but that would still be quite a stretch.

Of course. Because if you move it before notifying the governement you're in violation.

When our neighbor got a ticket for failing to record his deer, the citation was for “ failure to report” not poaching. So I would say it’s not the same. Different violations.

Poaching is not a technical term under our state laws. It is not a legal term as far as AL is concerned.

Devils advocate, I think it is all about how each person defines "poacher", but lets play a game. Are either of these scenarios poaching?

1 - Landowner shoots a deer on his property, during season, at night.

2 - Landowner shoots a deer on his property, during the day, outside of the season.

I'd call that poaching, but that landowner is not stealing the use of someone else's land and the critters that live on it are they?

The state holds game in "public trust" for the people. So baiting turkeys and shooting them with a .22 on your 5th generation family farm is still poaching, IMO.

Game on private property is a public trust. Landowner where the game resides has no more or less rights to that game.

Sorry. Haven’t been on site to respond. No I don’t think poaching has anything to do with Game Check. I am talking about the azzholes that refer to “slipping”. Well if you didn’t know, “slipping” means going onto someone else’s property to kill animals on there property. So these guys are the same scumbags that we are all talking about!

One clarification,I do know some people that refer to “slipping” as getting out of work to go hunting. I AM NOT referring to them.

Is "slipping" the same as "piddling"? Come March and April check out the turkey hunting forum. I'm sure somebody will justify it.....

Well now, turkey hunting is a whole different story. A true blue turkey hunter doesn't determine where he hunts, the turkeys make that decision. 😉

The son of a friend of mine was hunting yesterday morning and a 4pt came limping into his spot (powerline about 1/2 mile from closest dirt road. He said deer walked out into the middle of the field and just stood there for 15 minutes, never eating or looking around. Just staring off into one direction and then fell over. Dead. The boy got down and went to the deer and it was shot in the ass. Blood was all caked up and dry. He drug the deer out and when cleaning it found the bullet in the neck of the deer. Someone shot that deer from behind. He never heard a shot (nor did my daughter who was about 400 yards away) and with the dried blood we think it could have been shot by a neighbor (or a road rider) the day before.

Was very weird to have a deer walk into his field and fall over dead.

(And he did call it into game check)

According to aldeer you are not allowed to tell anyone what they can do on their own property. People who are for some regulations are just wanting to “limit” our neighbors opportunities to manage their own “herd”. If you want to manage your “herd” at night, that’s perfectly fine.

Guess I better stop using the term “ slippin”. We always consider slippin an act of slipping quietly through the woods. AKA stalk hunting.
