Going west this year to try for rio. What are some recommendations for public land birds. Not looking for someone’s honeyhole just somewhere with good bird population. Thanks

If you ever want to go the outfitter route, I know one in KS that will have you tagged out in a few hours!

public self guided in far western Oklahoma, been three times, killed birds every time. Don't wait till Al closed , go mid April.

We're headed to black kettle on april 16th. 3 years ago a great population. Last year numbers were down but still heard plenty of birds every day. Going to be there the last of 2nd week of season going into the third week.

The Kansas walk-in atlas has a lot of spots. But does take some internet scouting cause if it doesn't have a river with some trees you're out of luck. Even then, it may take some time to find them. I haven't hunted Rios (only easterns) in OK but those I know who have did it on public. Varying success.

We always stay at the motel in Cheyenne that has the restaurant attached to it. Clean rooms and good food, both inexpensive.

Black kettle is one place I have been looking at. Looks like enough property to at least have some fun.

Find a feed lot on private that borders the public.

We haul my camper out there and camp at skip out lake. It a haul but we like it. 2018 we went to southern Oklahoma and hunt a guy my dad know who works on cattle farms. Camped on the property, had to put a single strand of barbed wire up to keep the cows out.

firs trip out there we got a room, but talked about camping o a return trip. Then we got the bill for a week...about $100 for two of us for five nights. Camp my ass.....

First night at the restaurant the waitress brough us a bill for $10 for two of us, full meals. gave her a $20 and keep the change. She met us at the door and escorted us to our table every night after that!!! laugh She (18 years old and very pretty) wanted to come to Alabama with us but I told her my wife wouldn't let me keep her!!!!!

I went to western Oklahoma 2 years ago on public. I killed, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t struggle to do it. We went the 1st week of April I think. Had bad luck and caught a big cold front. It was sleeting the first morning.

my first trip to western Ok it snowed , mid April. Then we got stuck in the middle of a red dirt road...and we had four wheel drive. Slickest snot road I have ever seen. But we killed turkeys.

Yep I agree with the slick roads. At least that mud doesn't turn to concrete when it dries out like the mud around chadron Nebraska

Lmao, It’s easy to feel like a king out that way.

I remember when I thought I was hardcore ....and then I learned how little I was saving by eating out of tin cans and sleeping in my truck bed. Then I learned how dumb I was. Love the west.

Quack quack.
