The old days of scouting and hunting a certain buck are a dying tradition. The new generation just pours out a lot of corn, puts up cameras and sits on their couch and checks the cameras. Lol new generation? I guarantee there's just as many if not more middle aged hunters using cellular cams.

Guaranteed....i have nothing against it but for some reason I've gone more traditional the older I get...i strictly bow hunt on ground no cameras in season ect...i just love it even if i don't kill as much deer...i will put up a loc on this week for an area that tore up in a swamp I can't see 30 yards on ground tho...just hunt how ya want n have fun..i won't look down on anybody killing a big buck legal

Sitting on a greenfield is not even close to the same as hunting the big woods. But that’s just me. No different then hunting an acorn tree or persimmon. It's all a lure to bring the deer to you

I’ve certainly changed over the years. I used to scout, find sign that I liked, do this at several places and hunt it according to the wind and conditions. The element of surprise was exciting. Never knowing what you were hunting was great because there was always the hope that the next deer I saw may be a 160”. Now, I rarely find time to scout. I don’t walk around and look for sign much at all. I will find acorns and other food sources to hunt in early fall, but for the most part I have cams out in areas attracting deer (plots or trails, occasionally scrapes) and I’ll go hunt particular deer when the timing is right. There’s no hope of killing that giant because they typically don’t exist and it’s just a waiting a game for that mature buck I’m after. Kind of makes me glad I never got into running cameras. I still hunt without knowing what might show up . I almost pulled the trigger on a buck yesterday evening that came off the neighbor's property at 5:20pm. I saw good main beams and he was outside his ears so I put the crosshairs on him and was just about to take the shot at 30 yards when he cleared the brush and I saw he was just a good 3 year old. No, I didn't kill him but that 15 seconds of adrenaline is why I still hunt hard and can stay motivated this time of year. My neighbor has pics of about every deer using his place. He rarely kills them but always has pics of the ones I wind up killing.

Not much difference in the two. Not much difference in deer and turkey hunting? Well they are both conducted outdoors so I guess you have a point

Deer hunting is pretty much just sitting and waiting, an exercise in patience. Everybody I know finds an area either with a camera or by finding sign sits in that area and waits. Now you could go out and find a track follow those tracks until you find said deer and sneak up on it and shoot it with a bow. That would be hunting but I don’t know anyone that does this.

Most people would probably think I am foolish and consider my way of hunting unproductive but I didn't really have anyone teach me so the way I hunt is based on trial and error and some reading. I honestly pay no attention to sign, at all, when choosing an area to hunt and I've never used cameras. I look for very specific things like funnels, edge cover and very thick areas that have a soft edge such as where young planted pines meet a stand of hardwoods. I don't look for trails or droppings or even food. I feel like most sign is probably made at night so it does me little good to hunt it. After I find that type of area I pack my climber in and hunt it a couple of days to see what it produces. If I see a bunch of does I make a note and won't hunt it again until the older bucks start cruising. If I don't see anything I mark it off for the year and move on. I really don't hunt much other than bow season and peak rut unless I am learning new property, which was the case this year. If I ever put a ladder stand up it's because the area has produced multiple bucks over the years and I know I'll hunt it when the timing is right. Otherwise 9 out of 10 of my hunts are from a climber. Some hunters , much better than me, probably think I'm doing it wrong. They're probably right because I usually only kill one mature buck a year. I could probably turn Matt Brock loose on the places I hunt and he'd have them wiped out in no time and I'm not being facetious when I say that. He kills more mature bucks than anyone I know. If I am doing it wrong I don't want to know because it's still fun for me at 52 years old and if it was easier I probably wouldn't like it.

If they gobbled , couldn't smell and only moved during daylight, like turkeys, it would be easier but it is what it is.

Most of the guys I've known who were crazy addicted to game cameras were over the age of 50. Them dudes would check their cameras every day at one club I was in, then they'd wonder why they never saw any deer.
