.308 is what all three of my boys have (14 yrs old and twin 12 year olds). Awesome rifles. I wished I had one for myself.

My go too caliber is a 7mm-08. I like the youth and compact models for treestand and shooting house hunting. They also shine when trying to make a running shot on a animal. They just balance well for me and very mild recoil. Plenty of power to take down any animal around.

Use these 2 tables below, then consider ammo availability. Also if it is a "shooting house" gun you can get a heavier rifle, & put a larger area recoil pad on it. Me - 130gr out of a 270. Get a Ruger American or something with a hollow stock & fill the stock with plaster or something to put a little more weight in the rifle. Or a wooden stock and drill it an put lead in the stock. Then get a good (Simms) over the stock recoil pad. This will increase the area of the butt stock and further reduce kick felt on your shoulder (by increasing the area of the stock on your shoulder). https://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_ballistics_table2.htmhttps://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm
