In Alabama I’m pretty much shooting anything over 130. I’m also shooting the 5 yo 110

Which ever one turned broadside first. If you really didn't care you wouldn't ask.

Old enough to know better but still too young too care!

There’s few ppl on here who will believe me when I say this but I’ve let a 140” buck walk twice this year with a bow in my hand to kill a 123” deer he ran with that was older. I’m shooting the older deer every time. To me shooting a younger deer, regardless of headgear, does absolutely nothing for me. Shooting a barrel chested 200 lb 5+ year old that scores 110” wins out every day.

It’s no longer about score or how large the antlers are with me any more. It used to be. Now I want older bucks. Period.

Means more to me to shoot old mature deer. If you can outsmart one where I hunt you have done something. I never understood the six or eight point or better rule people have. Just shoot mature deer whether it be an 8 yr old 200lb three point or a four or five year old six point either way they are mature and need to be shot. I hunted in a club with the eight point or better rule and more 2-3 year old bucks were killed than mature deer. I got fined for shooting a 6 year old 175lb six point one year and that when I wrapped up the club deal and started leasing my own land

a 130 8 would be a nice deer. sure if I had him on camera I could "age" him but almost all my deer I kill there isn't enough time to tell how old they are. Sure a select few have been easier. But most of the time the deer is dead before I can look at his teeth. Running through timber I try to have time to figure tine length and mass. many, many times I have kicked myself bowhunting trying to figure if I want the deer only to exhaust my shot window.

My problem is I always think they are smaller before they are dead.

so, yes I would rather kill the older deer, but my hunting conditions almost never allow for me to really study body condition.

I personally wouldn't shoot a 2 year old if he scored net 171B&C, just the way I feel.

I'd quit shooting does if I could get 3-4 fresh kills given to me each year. I used to get em from a guy that lived near here, just load em and to the processor. Then I could just hunt big old bucks.

I shot one of them earlier this season. Ole hag would chase all the other does out of the field. Then she kicked a young tiny deer (probably just lost its spots) in the head and I thought she killed it but just knocked it out

Shot her and dont regret it at all. The same 8-10 does come out in that field about 4pm everyday and they seem happier without that old hag.

I hate a bully and that bi45h had it coming to her. Ground her old ass up into bacon burger.

Not sure how this is running my mouth. It is what most in Alabama will do, few will admit to it on a public forum. Maybe you hunt with him, both of y'all want to start shucks right out of the gate.

Same here. I killed a 206 pound 8 point that wouldn't break 100" by much. His pot belly and saggy back is what sold me.

He is a close friend, and we hunt together generally 6-10 days a year, usually at least two trips. We've been doing this for the last 5 years. He has not shot a buck in that time, and I have shot 5 bucks and a few does.

Those of you who know me know that I don't give a flying f*** what anyone else thinks about the deer that I shoot, but it brings up an interesting question.

Would you rather shoot -

a 2 year old buck that weighs 100 lbs and has an 18" wide rack that scores 130+

or

a 5+ year old buck that weighs over 200 with a high tight rack inside the ears that scores 110

What if both of these deer are in range at the same time?

I’m a self taught hunter that’s only hunted in clubs and leases I could afford with my own money. I don’t even know what a mature deer looks like in person. I’ve seen three from stand my whole hunting career (15 years). I’m tired of shooting 2 year olds so I would probably shoot the old deer.

I can't get a deer to come closer then 200 yds. There ain't any deer where I hunt, but I don't know if its north, or central Alabama. Till last week, I hunted 35 years since I killed a buck. My 12 year old daughter just can't shoot that far, but that isn't her fault. I just need a place to hunt so I can get 'em in closer. I'll be at home if any of ya'll want to take about it.

OH CRAP... Wrong thread. lol

I'll play devils advocte here a little.

For all the guys that have no interest in shooting a 3 year old deer no matter how big he is, the world record typical, the milo Hanson buck, was estimated to be 3 1/2 when killed. So how many of yall that strictly hunt age class and nothing else are letting a world record walk by to kill the 110" 6 year old?
