Well to say New Year’s Day started off bad would be a understatement. We got to the lease around 5am and started getting ready to hunt when I got asked the question “daddy did you grab my riffle?” To say I was a little ill would be a understatement since I had been planning this morning for the last day and a half due to great weather and rut kicking in. So instead of divide and conquer method we had to sit together so he could use my gun if necessary. We had been in the stand less then a hr and he’s shaking bad so I look over and ask him why he didn’t put his coveralls on. His reply was I didn’t think it was this cold. So we sat till 9 and hadn’t seen anything so we got down to slip the roads and see where the fresh rut sign was for the afternoon hunt. After seeing one doe and not much on camera I decided I wanted to check behind a field we haven’t hunted much that a bunch of does used early season hard. As soon as we got in the smz behind the field we started finding big fresh rubs. We actually had a spike run up on us and saw another doe before we eased out. I felt he needed to hunt the field thinking the bucks would be checking it for does but he wanted to climb where he could see the rubs and trails. We met his mom at lunch to get his gun and after listening to a little of the bama game slipped in about 2:30. I got him settled and grabbed my climber then eased over the ridge 300 yds to watch another bottom they cross in. I may have been still for 10 minutes when I heard him shoot. I text him “well” and immediately got two text back “big buck down come now” then another “I think it’s the 8pt” he’d been hunting that deer all year. Two seconds later he’s calling me telling me he was down and I told him to watch him and if he tried to get up shoot him again. To say he was excited would be a understatement. I finally got back down to him and got him down so we could check him out. As soon as we walked up on him I realized it was a 10 and we’d never gotten a pic of so he was a bonus buck. Looks like I got a new taxidermy bill now. host image[/img] [/ bp location finder[/img]
