I had heard most all my life that a hog would eat a dead hog
The more the hog population grows the more I've heard it so I got tired of hearing this myth/rumor
I decided to put it to the test
I killed a 100-120 lb boar and put a trail cam on it and waited several weeks before returning to the site to pull the card and see what happened over that bit of time
Had many hog pics but all just passed by without even a glimpse at the carcass
It really was a competition between coyotes and buzzards to see which could devour the hog first.
This was early spring when most food resources have dwindled away so there wasn't an abundance of acorns or much of anything else to eat

Hogs WILL eat hogs! I have seen it in Germany, and their hunting training teaches that hogs are carnivorous/cannibalistic (true Russian strains/not feral like here).

AND - my Grandfather won many awards raising hogs, and my cousin followed in his footsteps and was very successful as well. One of the things I VIVIDLY remember about my GF during birthing time: He would "live" in the hog house as the sows birthed. As a sow dropped piglets coming up in number to equal the number of teats to suckle, he would monitor that sow VERY closely! Once she got to one piglet less than the # of available teats, the next piglet birthed, he would lickety-split snatch it up by the hind leg and immediately put it on the teat of another birthing sow with lower number of piglets than available teats. I remember how quickly he would do this and asking him about it. His response was that a sow would eat the piglets down to one less than teats than she had to feed them. And he didn't want to loose any piglets - that was $$$!

Yeah I was around a lot of hogs growing up too, We, Uncles, Grandfathers all raised hogs and nevr once did I see or hear any of them telling anything about a hog eating another hog. This isn't Germany either. I also am very aware that hogs are carnivorous and have heard many tales of bodies being disposed of in hog pens but I cant confirm that because I havent done that experiment yet grin
You missed my point completely. The setting was in the wild when food wasn't at a premium and if cannibalism was going to take place it would've then...it didnt

They are omnivores. They will eat just about anything. I shot a doe during bow season. I went back to camp to get my deer cart. When I came back there were 5 hogs over my doe getting ready to chow down. Got there in the nick of time. Really just depends on how hungry they are as to what they go after. Most are full of corn so they may not,

They absolutely will eat anything that aint nailed down if they get hungry enough...they stayed in the gut pit in texas...eat deer, turkeys, other hogs...cardboard ...fish heads. i ustah have to clean the protein feeders out after a rain or they stop up...bout the viscosity of diarreah and smelled like it too..soured corn as well..those were their favorites..you could kill a truck load off a pile of soured protein slush..if you could stand the smell.

It's too tough for them to break into. Take a knife and open the carcass up with a slit down the side or belly and it will go fast.

Well that cam was from china
I'll try this again soon and maybe cover the hog with acorns or corn to entice them to take a bite

I have a hog on the ground with a cam covering any predation that will take place and I will post the results after about 2 weeks

in reference to Carbon's soured protein slush.. Never seen it personally, but (again, in Germany), heard reliable stories of large herds of hogs laid out stone drunk from eating leftover fermented sugar beets!

Its not a myth brother, I’ve watched in amazement. Just last week I killed 8 more over one I killed that morning. I usually slice them open.

Anyone is more than welcome to post pics to contradict my statements about this
This will be the second time I’ve done this experiment so we shall see some time tomorrow if it proves true again

I made it to the carcass yesterday and pulled the sd card from the cam
The card had 3790 pics on it and 90% of them were of buzzards feasting on the hog
There were several pics of hogs passing by without so much as a glance at the dead hog.
I left the cam to see if there would be any more predation or cannibalism
It'll be another week before I can get over there

I've been chased off the blood trail, by hogs, while tracking one I just shot.
I've seen hogs attack and kill a wounded hog, and then proceed to eat it immediately.

I pulled cam from the carcass yesterday after watching 2 buzzards circling and the flying away

It was reduced to skin a bones...there were hogs passing by on the pics but no cannibalism

From all the replies on this thread there has to be no doubt that cannibalism will take place but I think it has to be in instances of a controlled environment or an extreme lack of any food source
For this to be a natural behavior for wild hogs when food is plentiful remains to be seen
This was my second experiment on this subject with all evidence pointing to it not happening and these observations took place 30 miles or more apart

Good Lord. You must not have many scavengers around. I shot a decent size sow and a couple of piglets a couple of weeks ago and when I went back to fill the feeder about 5 days later I had to search for remains. I found one section of spine about a foot long and searched for the head and never could find it.

Shoot at my place you can leave a boar in the middle of a 10 acre field and buzzards wont even touch it. They just kind of melt away over a several month period.

Guys, I've been a guest around here for quite a while but after reading this thread I had to join the club so I could tell you about my experience with hogs and cannibilism.

My partner and I bought a trap from Barry last spring and have caught and killed 64 hogs on our 1200ac lease in Perry County.

Back in October we caught a sounder of 19 that consisted of a 250# boar, 6 mature sows, a mix of young sows and boars and 4 little pigs that still had racing stripes. One of the little ones was feeding at the gate when we dropped it and evidently tried to scoot out but got caught under it. His hind end was inside the trap. After the dust settled from shooting them all we noticed that the half of the pig that was inside the trap was completely gone. No blood, no bones, no hair, nothing. Just a little hole under where his hind end should have been.

Our camera was still running but there were so many hogs in there we couldn't determine which one ate the pig. We assume that it was the big boar. I had always heard that the boars would eat the young ones, this is as close to proof as I've seen.

Well, if the piglet was alive when under the trap, the hog didn't eat a "dead" pig PYhunter.

BOFF, I see your point, but I think when that gate slammed down on his back he was DRT..

As far as not joining in prior to this, I've seen the bashing some guys get. I'll just proceed with caution.

Thanks for the welcome!

I walked through there yesterday evening and theres been plenty of hog activity in the wallow but the boar hasn't been touched

You might have a rare an illusive breed of vegan hogs. 😆

I wonder if I could advertise for vegan hog hunts

I'm with you on that left horn.
We caught 6 Tuesday night, dang sure hated to make the haul to the camp and back when we had to work the next day but we had a sow in there that was about to drop her litter and we decided to kill her right then instead of having to round them all up later.
Our deer hunting has definitely improved this year since we've been working on them.

We caught 86 off our place in Perry Co last yr. Not a pig sighting since September for us! Our green fields do not have a single rooted area in any of them and 2 years ago they looked like they were getting plowed back up constantly.

We were free of them all season until recently. There are a bunch of water oak acorns still on the ground and 2 sounders have shown up now.
I don't recall ever seeing a place in our fields where it's been rooted up, but they graze the clover like cattle. I didn't know the would graze like that..

I probably kill 200-300 pigs annually in hay fields. They love to graze.
