why would you want to waste all that meat by shooting the shoulders? Not that I haven't shot a lot of shoulders out on running deer, but I would never want that shot just to create red jello and some flappy legs. Cause I want him DRT!

N all day. That's the "go get the 4 wheeler shot", not the "let's go track it" shot. +1

If broadside I have always shot them tight behind the shoulder. It may not always cause a DRT kill but it's a sure double lung and I have never lost one that I hit in that area. Don't like shooting them in the shoulders because I like having that shoulder meat made into sausage. Don't care for neck shots because despite all the people who claim it never fails I have seen it go bad for several friends and family members.

It drops 200’ to the creek bottom on both sides. I want to anchor one in the field.

https://youtu.be/QYX1KKJgg78I thought this was pertinent, but I highly disagree with his Treestand shot placement. Deer Drop Every Time. I’ve shot over enough in my life that I learned to shoot low.

I was kinda shocked reading through the first 3 pages where half the guys do full blown shoulder shots. I'm with you on this one.

I’ve never understood the thought process of shooting a buck in the shoulder. Why would I shoot a deer in the most heavily protected spot? A deer can go miles on three legs, but there has never been a deer walk the earth that can live without lungs.
Also, I’ve never shot a deer with a proper bullet through the lungs when it didn’t blow blood out both sides and fall within sight. I’m talking 223 to 300 mag. Doesn’t matter.

Take the high percentage , most forgiving shot. Not only will a center fire rifle get the job done through the lungs, so will a broad head. I shoot them with a rifle same spot I do with a bow. If it’s a doe and I have a crystal clear broadside shot I will shoot her right behind the point of her elbow on the front shoulder so I won’t tear up meat. If it’s a bigger deer like a buck (160 lbs and up) I’m going center mass on that front shoulder. He can’t run very far if both his front shoulders are broken and he’s digging a ditch with his nose.

High shoulder shots are popular, but one of the most unforgiving and high risk shots to take. I preach this from the rooftops and try to discourage it. It works great if you hit the spine and anchor the deer. It is a disaster if you’re 1” high anywhere in the top of the shoulder. The deer receives enough spinal shock for temporary paralysis, and by the time you get to the deer you’re wondering where it went. I’ve seen a lot of deer not recovered from high shoulder shots. 2-3” behind the shoulder, center mass, is double lung and a dead deer 100% of the time. He may run 40-50 yards but he’s going to be there dead. Agreed. High shoulder shots result in a lot of wounded deer. I like to put the bullet in the crease behind the shoulder, or between the O and P in the photo for a broadside shot. Another thought is to aim for the exit hole, and on quarreling shots this is the rule for me. I prefer a deer to be slightly quartered away, aim a little further back and exit on the offside shoulder.
