Hunting a trail about 25 yards off an active green field. Had deer in field behind me, and thought I was hearing a coyote or fox slipping through the woods. The wind was blowing briskly and it was difficult to hear. Sound got closer in the brush to my left, and suddenly a deer head pops out 7 steps from the base of my tree. She takes 4 more steps and looked to be a small doe and by herself, and I decided to take her. In drawing the longbow and almost aiming straight down, I noticed my lower limb was touching the climbing stand seat bar. I slowly touched the drawn bow, lower limb to the bar and moved it back into my leg, and then refocused on the deer who was watching the other deer in the field. I released and heard the head cut its way in, like slicing a melon. The doe takes off and I see my fletching sticking up and hear her smacking trees with the newly found arrow. After 50 yards with the wind and my hearing, I can no longer distinguish for sure what is the deer and what is my imagination of the deer. I think I hear a crash, then another crash, and some more commotion, but I have no way of being sure. Worried there may be little blood as the arrow didn't appear to pass through, I think about sitting for a while. I looked with my binoculars in the last direction I heard her, and then looked at where she was standing when I shot, and I see 2 pecan size drops of blood. I get down and the blood trail was easy to see. However, she went through the thickest, one-way, skinny-vegetarian, no sweet eating, dwarf sized guy who still needs to get on your knees to go down the trail, ever. She went about 100-120 yards and was much bigger than I was expecting. I took my bow and quiver just in case, and had to return them, before dragging her out. The trail with this meat eating, not skinny, sweet eating guy, was much bigger on my 2nd time to her and dragging her back. The arrow did not exit, but had the skin protruding on the opposite armpit. I was quite amazed at the blood on the ground, tree trucks and waist high leaves, with only one hole. I haven't taken a deer with a long bow in a few years, and it was a Blessing to get back to the simple side of archery! God Bless, David B.
