Names I heard mentioned were Kevin Steele and Joe Brady

Names I heard mentioned were Kevin Steele and Joe Brady Brilliant; offer another big package to another one with no head coach experience or one with with bad head coach experience.

LSU during its bye last week engaged in discussions with Brady's agent about "NFL compensation" in the area of $1.5 million a year to ensure that he stays in Baton Rouge. He currently makes about $400,000.
LSU's going to lock up Brady. He's 29, having great success and LSU envisions a good future with him. Brady damned sure isn't going to Arkansas.
Kevin Steele would be stupid to step into Arkansas. Minnesota just reupped with PJ Fleck on a big contract.
Arky is truly 3-4 years from serious contention, not a finger-snap turnaround with a hard-nosed coach. It's going to take a while. Plus you have to deal with old meddling boosters, Jerry Jones, dealing with playing games in Little Rock "out of tradition" even though it's incredibly stupid, and having no players.
Western Kentucky beat them like a drum. I'll bet Vandy could beat Arky five times out of five. They're horrible. Whoever steps into that better have a contract like Morris's and Gus's with a lot of guaranteed zeroes.
BTW, Morris gets 70 percent of his remaining contract - $10 million. A big chunk of that comes within 30 days. Smart agent.

Arkansas is still paying for hiring Bret Bieliema who was a terrible fit in the SEC and left the program in shambles. I think Steele is an excellent DC, but some folks are not HC material. Steele can get a DC job that pays him @ $2 million a year at any school that values defense. He's not HC material IMHO. Joe Lee Dunn, Bill Oliver, and others were great coordinators, but not HC material.

Read in the last week or two that Arky has stopped paying Bielema his buyout due to him - in UA's view - not making appreciable effort to find another full-time job. He's a consultant or whatever it is for the Patriots. Probably will end up in court. Among the names I've read for Arky: Malzahn, Norvell at Memphis (also possibly an FSU target), Littrell at North Texas State, Drinkwitz at Appy State, Leach, Harsin at Boise State, Napier at Louisiana-Monroe (a former Saban assistant). Interestingly enough, Malzahn's buyout is a bazillion dollars if Auburn fires him. But if he leaves on his own, he owes Auburn $7 million. If he loses to UGA and Bama or even splits, would be interesting to see if AU waives his $7M or takes less and lets him walk IF Arky goes after him. Was thinking more about Arky this afternoon. I'm sure they have good guys but they don't have SEC-caliber guys, which is obvious along with Morris being a mediocre head coach. How he (his agent) convinced Arky to pay him after a mediocre run at SMU is mystifying. Arky must have some idiots with checkbooks. So you have a team with Bielema players he recruited for power-smashmouth Big Boy football who in the last two years were told they were switching to the Morris-Malzahn style razzle-dazzle stuff. And now they're going to have another coach who probably will be an RPO-style guy who still needs players for that system. That means probably another season of building, at least, unless the coach has the Midas touch. If so, you're looking at five seasons at Arkansas of a LOT of money in payouts, declining fan interest, declining ticket sales, declining donations, and the chore of building all that up again along with playing in the SEC West. Recruits are going to be hard-pressed to commit unless they want immediate playing time, really love UA, or don't have other offers. Possibly all three. Clear proof of how a screwed-up coaching hire and then "being patient" can ruin a program for possibly 7-8 years. You can't be patient anymore when you clearly see that it's wrong, things are going south and that's when it's time to pull the trigger.

Surely to goodness the brain trust at Rkansas isn't stupid enough to hire Gus Malzahn. I wouldn't hire him to coach high school ball.

I wouldn't think they will hire him, but they hired Bielema and Morris so you never know.

Of course still early, very early but ESPN saying that Malzahn and Norvell at Memphis are top two being looked at. Just do not think Gus is going to leave Auburn on his own. To much money to lose.

I'm not sure how stupid Gus is but if he doesn't realize that next season he's almost assured of a 6 or 7 win season at best and he doesn't know what that means for his employment and his future at the D1 level then he should check in on Terry Bowden and Mike Dubose and see what his long term career looks like.

If I'm AD Greene at AU, it's pretty simple when Gus comes to me and says that Arky has offered him WalMart money so he needs to renegotiate his contract, I'd tell him he has a contract with AU, honor it or let me know you are leaving by the end of the day, please.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
