I got a decent buck on camera still in velvet but I didn’t think nothing about it until Demp posted about his big buck yesterday. It got me thinking why is it? I have seen others the last few days on Facebook where people have killed velvet bucks. Some people might say due to hot and dry conditions which might be true but it has been been hot and dry before and velvet has came off at normal time. Just curious on y’all thoughts.

I had the same post last year. My neighbor killed a 9pt this week still in velvet.

Different deer, different hormones. They don't all shed at the same time.

I saw 6 bucks the other day. All still had velvet except for one. This is LA though. I've seen deer down here hold their velvet well into November. To each is own I reckon. Now if you see a buck in velvet in January it either has been castrated or is a he she.

Nothing unusual. Most bucks will shed velvet between Sept 15-October 15 but a few will keep it on the first week of archery season.
