I remember Opal very well. The cleanup from Erin was just wrapping up in Pensacola when Opal hit.

It takes a long time to grow an old friend.

I remember the mass exodus from opal. The direct result of opal was the beach express. Personally I think there is too much shear up this way. Would weaken any storm that headed our way.

I agree. I think it will just be a rain maker.

Yes it was. I was in college at Birmingham Southern and we had trees down everywhere and a car overturned. The wind was like what you see on the weather channel during a hurricane at the coast. It was nuts.

My senior year at Auburn. It was a war zone. I remember being at a keg party that night and watching a huge oak tree in the yard get blown down as the idiot college kids (me included) cheered. Crazy.

I remember the results of Opal to some mighty fine oaks and pines on a ridge in one of my favorite hunting area in NW Florida.

I was thinking opal was a rain maker that dumped like 25" of water on and around henry county? But i also remember one along that time that stripped the tarps off just about every module up here and even blew some of the modules apart.

It was Opal, but it wasn't 130 mph in BHM. I think it was 130 at landfall with gusts up to 100 mph in BHM. There were big oaks down everywhere. Some old couple decided to go site seeing in our neighborhood during what was left of the eye passing. A big oak fell on their car and killed either one or both of them. We lost a 40 ac patch of 12 year old planted pines in Dallas County, looked like a field of pick-em up sticks.

Opal hit in early October. 10/5

This year has been warm enough that the Gulf may be as warm as it was that year at that time of the month

I remember Opal as well. I was in school at Bama and working at the student health center between classes. I remember watching a big live oak limb smash into some unlucky persons car. I was in my own little world and didn't pay any attention to anything except beer, hunting, and females, and had no idea a hurricane was why I was watching that happen.

College kids are pretty stupid. I know from experience.

DC is correct, we never got 130 mph winds in Dothan but trust me 100 mph winds is enough.
