I'm looking at doing some public land hunting for the first time this season, just for a change of pace I guess. I live not too far from the Cahaba WMA and am considering the Refuge area. Has anyone have any experience in that area?

Nope. I've never seen any deer down there.

Public land has better habit and bigger deer than most private land that I hunt in Alabama. If you scout and put effort in you’ll be successful. It just may take a couple years of learning before you really figure it out. I mean Cahaba WMA is 41K acres of more than just pine plantation. There is plenty of space and good woods to grow big deer

Thanks to all of you, can’t wait to get out there and start learning the area, do you need a management area license to scout?

SBO, no wma license needed to scout. The terrain is very rugged and the deer population is average. Just keep realistic expectations and have fun!

Thanks Southwood, I don't expect 140" deer out of this, really just looking for a change of pace in my deer hunting; this is just the next step and the beginning (hopefully) of trips to come into other states.

Not a lot of deer but trophy potential is my experience.

With wind direction often out of NW it seems bad to park at the trailhead parking lot and walk in with the wind at your back. Haven’t tried the west side of the river yet. Like others said lots of grade changes on the Topo map. Most likely devoid of deer but I’ll keep an eye out for them, again.
