If youre too worried about it, im sure theres someone nearby that will gladly hunt and eat your deer for you, thereby relieving you of this worry.

jwalker .. I was asking for somebody like troy or clem perhaps nighthunter to provide some insight. Im pretty comfortable with my knowledge both scientific and in outdoors in regards to the whitetail so Im trying to learn by seeking information from others. You should try it.. As for me I would have to hit the deer first...

I could see where TB would be easily transferred, it is highly contagious if active. If you don’t wear Gloves when cleaning and processing deer you should. Deer carry blood borne pathogens just like other animals. But TB can be caught from the air, if you puncture the chest cavity.

TB is not very common in southern deer herds. When it’s found it’s isuallu way north of here.

I had not heard of TB via deer being able to jump species so I was surprised to read of it in article. What would you look for in a deer. Lungs are typically taken out via shot???

TB affect much more than the lungs.

While I would never suggest that you don't check your deer for weird stuff, this case happened in Michigan, way northern part, in 2017. Previous cases were also in Michigan, in 2002 and 2004, but none of these were absolutely confirmed to be from deer.

Yes, bovine Tb is transmissible to humans but bovine Tb accounts for <2% of tuberculosis cases in the United States. Most cases of bovine Tb in humans are caused by consuming unpasteurized dairy products and the likelihood of contracting bovine Tb from a wild deer is minuscule. There has been only one confirmed case of transmission of bovine Tb to a human from an infected white-tailed deer. In that case, bovine Tb was thought to be transmitted via bodily fluids from the infected deer contacting an open wound on the person during the field dressing process..

That's the only absolute I was able to find.

Does the tb vaccine not protect you against getting this from animals?

I don’t think it’s very common to get the TB vaccine. I know it’s out there but I’m pretty sure you have to be in a really high probability of getting to receive vaccination.

I thought the TB vaccine is mandatory for all kids to be able to go to public school. Pretty sure I got that shot as a kid.

I’m a nurse and I work where TB is 3x higher than anywhere else in the country and I don’t have the vaccination.

Now if your from Southeast Asia or India yeah maybe.

So if we sought out and got the TB vaccine would we be protected in the extremely rare case we came across a deer with TB?

The vaccination is so rare. I had to look it up. We get tested yearly or in my case 2x a year. I have to keep a watch for symptoms of TB. I have come in contact with lots of people that have/had it and never had a problem. Cases in the US are relatively low compared to other countries. But where I work there is a lot of people from India and Asia...so incidence is higher.

So this is good. If a normally healthy person (aged 18-64, no crazy health issues) comes down with TB what is the treatment method? Is it certain death?

Used to lock you up if you didn’t follow treatment and force you to take meds . It’s 3-6 months of pills but it’s important that you don’t miss doses.
