Wal Mart has Royal Oak huge 30 lb bags right now for $16. I’m not sure I’d use anything else at that price.

I've had one for years. Rarely use it. Defeats the purpose for me, the longer the coals take the more I get to drink before the food is done. I'm not a beer and food kinda guy, it's one or the other.

After using lump for several years, I'd never go back to briquette's. I have a grill bottle with a propane torch hooked to it that stays on my back porch. It literally takes me one minute or less to have the coals going. I just lit my egg about 5 minutes ago. I'll be cooking in 10 more minutes. I make a hole in the coals, lit the torch, hold it in the bottom of the hole, get the coals red and then fill the hole back up with unburned charcoal.

I use the looftligher on my egg and light it in 5 places like the number 5 on a dice. Works good and ready in no time. I’ve tried cowboy lump but it burned way to fast for me. Charcoal wise I use a chimney starter. Like was said use your old 12 pack boxes, but newspaper is best if you can still find one.

Well... Since we are now talking about how to start lump charcoal, I use cotton ball soaked in 91% alcohol. I keep a mason jar full of them by the grill. If I'm going to smoke I use one or two off to one side and put a couple of pieces over the top of the balls and light them. In a few minutes I'm up to 200+ and ready to smoke. If I'm going to grill I use about 5 balls tucked all around the coal bed and in about 15 minutes we're up to about 400+.

I use a chimney and a weed torch. Put the charcoal in the chimney, hit the bottom with the weed torch for about 10 seconds and it will get going.
Irish guy's cotton ball method works well too. I will put a couple in the the bottom of the chimney to get it started if I don't use the weed torch.

Map gas torch here. They burn upside down, or any way you need to hold them. We grill out pretty often & have been using the same torch & bottle for about three years.
