I've never worked for a union outfit in my life, however the union (USW) has been campaigning at a particular mill here in South Alabama for a while now and they are counting numbers, I no longer work here but just want to know to satisfy my curiosity, how does the union operate to benefit the employees? I have heard the term union negotiator brought up alot, do they elect a negotiator to represent the USW and deal with the current management at said company to come to a happy medium as far as what they want to implement? I'm a lost ball in high weeds as I know nothing about unions, if you have a few minutes, please enlighten me👍

I'm no longer on BP meds so I'll refrain from commenting.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

You'll get extremely mixed opinions on unions in general but I dont know much about the USW and havent heard much good of it.
With that being said I'm a UA91 member as an HVACservice tech and have what I feel like is one of the best jobs a hvac guy can get in Alabama.
A trade union I feel is a different deal that the plant type unions.

They basically make unreasonable demands that increase costs for the company. Collective bargaining for the union contract is expensive since it involves lawyers. Oh, yeah. It also drives a wedge between the supervisors and employees. The union will tell you that the company is constantly after your job and all management is evil. And worst of all, the union protects the troublemakers who SHOULD be fired.

Not wanting to stir the pot, just want to know so if the day comes and I need to sign a card I can make a educated decision and feel confident about it,I have a cousin in the local and he is a carpenter by trade, from what little he has told me his insurance is paid for, he does have to pay dues each month, and as long as he keeps his dues paid he will always have a job to do somewhere albeit in another state sleeping in a hotel, the union will have his back...with that said, he is a contractor. The USW is trying to unionize this plant..not sure that the difference would be, hence this post 🤷

I can’t speak for all unions. I work out of IBEW LU 175, Chattanooga TN. That’s all I really know is what I’ve learned through the IBEW.
That being said, at least the way we work, the union sits down with the contractors association and negotiates certain terms. They include insurance, retirement, pay scale, work hours, and a list of other items. The contractor, in return for agreeing to the collective bargain, gets to hire as many or as few electricians off the books. They know that when they call they will be supplied with a qualified electrician who has undergone 5 years of training and is up to date on all safety training.
I wish I had joined years ago. The pay is more than competitive, but the benefits are where you really come out. I get full family BCBS coverage, including dental and vision, plus retirement at no cost to me.
Before I went IBEW, I had a preconceived notion that a lot of ppl have about unions. But, I now realize these guys, my brothers, are for the vast majority, hard working respectable guys. They really do work hard to provide a quality product to the customer , as a matter of pride, and to take care of the contractor.

And that's what I'm curious about.. seems like from what I can gather that plant (employees) will elect officials to head up the union that are currently working in the mill, and are pro union, not sure what will happen after everything is said and done.

I think this maybe, as stated above, the difference between a trade union and a unionized plant. In the IBEW, you get a ticket. As long as you are paid up, you can use that ticket to work anywhere nation wide. You simply go there and sign the books and are called to go to work. Yes there are dues, but for your return, they are next to nothing. I have no idea how the USW works.
