Gas is for metrosexual pansies. Man up and get you a smoker grill. Use wood. And cut your own damn wood.

I've had the Akorn grill and now have the Vision ceramic grill. The akorn rusted out after about 5 years and I spent about $600 on the vision. I liked the akorn better for cooking mainly because it didn't leak air like the vision. I used lot less charcoal with it. The second grid was a lot easier to put in too. I think if I had to do it over again I'd buy another akorn for a couple hundred dollars and just take better care of it.

My Akorn is 3yrs old, I think. It stays outside on an uncovered patio, but under a weatherproof cover made specifically for it, and it's still in good shape. Cooks great, too. Hard to beat for that type grill, for $300ish.
With that said, if I was looking for something today, I'd be looking hard at the pellet grills that Academy has for $400ish. (Shh....nobody tell Outback). They don't get quite as hot as an egg/akorn/etc - I think 500 or so is about as high as you can get - but that's still plenty hot enough to sear a steak. And the fact that you can get them with built in grill and meat thermometers and the grill will adjust itself accordingly is a game changer. There is no having to monitor how much wood you have in it, fiddling with vents to regulate temp, etc. You just set it like you would an oven and it does the rest. Hard to beat that.

a very affordable & very capable charcoal option is a Weber 26" kettle w/a Slow-N-Sear & a Maverick thermometer; within a short period of time & minor fiddling, it can be dialed in ... look up Adrenaline Barbecue on Google/YouTube
loss of power w/a pellet grill is my major knock/concern w/that type of setup -- out where i live, it can/does happen ... and i don't like the restrictions on charcoal w/a ceramic grill like a BGE ... when i'm ready to BBQ, i wanna grab a bag of Kingsford, some seasoned hickory wood, and get after it ...

Pit Boss is the best bang for the buck. Heavier built than Traeger , cooks hotter, more features, cheaper. I sold my Traeger and bought a Pit Boss.

I agree with outback. Don't waste your money. Go get you a $100 Weber kettle, some charcoal, lighter fluid and fire that beotch up. Best cooking grill I have ever had. You can smoke meat on it, cook a fine steak anything. If you have trouble with intimacy in the bedroom, drag that baby in there with you and you will feel like a real man. Lighter fluid 🤭
Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

I think if I had to do it over again I'd buy another akorn for a couple hundred dollars and just take better care of it. I followed that same path, but was fortunate to get my first Vision (For the house) for $299 and the second Vision (For the cabin) for only $200. I agree with you on all points about the Akorn being easy to use. I almost bought another one, but I found such a good deal on both Visions, that buying them was a no brainer. If I was a person who was just getting into grilling and smoking with a Kamado style grill, there is no doubt in my mind that I would start with an Akorn again. Best cooking grill for the money, but like any metal grill they will eventually rust out from the salt in the marinades, the acid in the charcoal ash and the inevitable rain water incursion.
