I can't weigh in with anymore authority than BGH, but I'll just say this - GO! Texas is a different world than what we're used to hunting here in Bama. Target rich environment. Go and enjoy it. Yep

I've got a friend in west Texas that caters to hunters. He does trophy hunts, management hunts, father/son hunts etc.
That being said; the majority of "management" hunts that I'm aware of are high fence operations. I'm not saying that free-range ranches don't offer these but I don't work with many of them.

With management hunt guidelines being so broad, what is your friends guidelines for a management hunt. I haven’t been to Texas in near 15 years but I’m open to lots of things and another Texas trip is one of them

Most places i know are about 5.5-7.5 scoring less than 145, in my experience if they make it to 6.5 an they are still a framey 8 that will go bout 135...he gon die. Most times you can tell a buck is gonna be a trophy at 2.5 sometimes even 1.5. Place i guided we had a couple that wer 8 points at 1.5 an by3.5 they wer knockin on 180... high fence yes, 4k acres.. but that was it..low fence next door had same quality deer and density...apply that when considering hunts in south texas..most LF is just as good as HF if the right folks are managing it.

I agree on animal quality. I also think that some folks make too big a deal about high fence. I wouldn't hunt a 200 acre high fence, but once you pass about 2500 acres, I would say that most critters don't even know the fence is there.

Your right huck, they do and 90% have no idea what even goes on because theyve never been there..they just dislike the thought i guess..and id assume deer breeders and their little rinky dink pay hunt operations are the cause for that mentality.
