Got a perfect spot to plant but the problem is in the title. Haven't did a soil test yet but any fool can see it's mostly N bama white sand. Have y'all had any luck with planting in such areas? If so what- other than just rye? Any suggestions welcome. Throw and go would likely be our 1st try if I don't get a better plan

I’ll just be honest JD unless you’re on nance creek near courtland there’s just not a lot of true deep sand in N AL. It’s probly more of a silt loam that can grow near bout anything given some moisture. You should be fine with about anything you want.

We have one area that is really sandy. We still plant a strip of it every year but to be honest, it doesn't grow nearly as good as our other plots. The deer still hammer it though. The hogs love that area. I suppose the sand is easier for them to root around in.

FWIW, the Indians loved it too. That area has one of the highest concentrations of artifacts on the place. They liked living on well drained land too, I guess

I can show a road bed in Winston county that looks like a pic of orange beach.! You'd be surprised. Literally felt like walking on the beach. Its near the top of a hill where sand stone has erosion washed in. I thought about a box blade to try to scrape some off. Not many places to plant but recent logging left this spot great in a natural crossing

If it's sand, might be low ph. Soil test and be prepared to lime it. My home place and some of my lease is very sandy. Get the ph right and you can grow some excellent food plots in sand

No. Get the CEC right first. Nothing with bind with coarse soil particles even if PH is ideal if CEC is below 5. Picture a cocklebur seed. Or Velcro. Higher the CEC it looks like those 2. Means plant food and water binds to it. Now picture a grape. Slick on all sides. That’s low CEC or sand. You gotta build organic matter in that situation. Soil structure.
