I’ve rarely ever anchored a boat, but my fishing style has drastically changed. I’ve been after catfish lately and plan on chasing crappie.

The other night, my son and I tried to anchor by Stevenson bridge and drop bait on the down river side of the pillars, but the current was rolling. I had 2 15lb anchors out with 50’ each of anchor rope, but it just wouldn’t hold. I’m not sure what the proper name name for the anchor is, but I’ve heard them called river anchors. Like a mushroom anchor, but three distinct petals.

What kind of anchors do y’all use in moderate currents?

a rope throwed up over the trusses or a C clamp if its low enough to clamp onto under a bridge. I dont hardly ever drop an anchor but you need about 3x more rope out than the water is deep for the anchor to grab good so if you only had 50' out youd be good in close to 20' of water. you want the anchor laying on its side as much as possible

How deep is the water there? I'm asking because your anchor rope should be several times the depth of the water.

Yeah,what GK said.

I absolutely HATE using an anchor. The Ultrex trolling motor that I bought would be the very last item on the boat that I’d part with if I had to sell something. In consistent current or a good breeze blowing the boat absolutely just doesn’t move. I have an 80lb 24 volt. If I had known how much I’d be fishing below the dam I would have gone with the 36 volt 112lb or whatever the poundage is. Mine won’t hold the boat when the turbines are rolling full bore.

There are cheaper TM’s with spot lock than mine. Any MK motor with spot lock would function as good as mine as long as it’s 2 years old or newer with the newer spot lock The 1st Gen spot lock isn’t worth having.

And dangerous. Folks dont realize how dangerous it is to anchor in current like what's below the gville dam. Glad your TM will hold.

Claw ancor with an eye on top and bottom. Connect 3' of chain to the bottom eye then zip tie the chain to the top eye.

Been using a Grappler Anchor for years

Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

I wont anchor in fast or even slightly strong current like u described. But when i do i use a regular anchor like u have i guess. Just a mushroom 10lb anchor. If a 10 pound anchor wont hold me then i wont be out in it. If im below the dam i troll constantly. I wont anchor unless its calm enough and im safe. I once pulled up my anchor and drove off. I forgot a $200 bait caster that i had out. It was casted out and lying in my boat. I drove off and jerked the rod outta the boat. I was pissed lol. I have been hit with trees and so on while anchored. I feel like a sitting duck when anchored in current.

Danforth anchors are what I use. I've left my fair share of them on the bottom. I anchor as a last resort. And make sure it is not a rocky bottom. If you have access to rebar and a welder, look up homemade Box anchors.

Guess I should have mentioned I use the zip tie so if the anchor get stuck I can brake the zip tie and pull the anchor fro the bottom. Most of my fishing is in rocky heavy current areas

I’ve seen those. Called hurricane anchors. I’ve considered building one. Have the steel and the welder, it’s just finding time to make it.

I use something like this and anchor in heavy wind in marsh or sand bottom inshore fishing. I have about 3’ of chain attached. Anchoring in a river current scares me.

I have one just like it. You just need to make sure you lay out plenty of rope and don't use too heavy of a line. You want the rope to break before you get pulled under. You never know when a submerged log could roll into your anchor rope. A really long rope will change the angle so it's pulling outward, not downward therefore keeping the bow up. Never anchor from the transom in a current.
