Just wanted to share the frustration and enlightenment I received yesterday, and hope it may save someone else the hassle. Maybe this is common knowledge...

Uncle has a 2008 Kawasaki Prairie 360 4x4 that like many, only gets used during hunting season, and sits during the summer. Always runs 93 no ethanol in it, and cuts the fuel off. Try to run as much out as possible out of the bowl. Well after sitting for 5 months, it won't crank yesterday. I pull the plug and it smells like the stalest fuel you can imagine. Seeing a drain for the carb bowl, I open it up and let a bunch of stale fuel out. Cut the fuel line to ON and let it fill the carb and start running out of the overflow. I close the fuel drain on the bowl, and it doesn't stop. Wheeler has about 3/4 tank of fresh fuel. I switch the fuel shut off to OFF, and it doesn't stop. I scramble for a piece of hose to attach to the fuel bowl drain. Ended up having to take the tank to carb fuel line off and plug it up. That's when I realized that the fuel shutoff valve isn't shutting off. Back to the carb. I end up taking the carb off, and dropping the bowl. Fine layer of green varnish in the bottom, that when hit with fresh fuel, flakes up like a snow globe. I looked at the bowl drain mechanism, thinking there was either a check ball that had fallen out, or some trash in it keeping the valve from sealing. Nothing, everything looks good. Then I realized what was going on. On gravity feed carburetor bikes, there is a bowl overflow that bypasses the drain valve to release fuel in the event that the float sticks open. This keeps the fuel from filling up the carb and spilling into the intake and cylinder, preventing a possible hydrolock and cylinder damage. Just so happens this overflow comes out of the fuel bowl drain as well. Most wheelers will have a drain hose attached to the bowl to drain this fuel down and dump around the rear axle.

So after about 4 hours of fooling with it, cleaning the carb, and letting the RTV gasket set, it's running good as new.
If you ever notice fuel leaking and can't figure it out, most likely your float is hung open. I actually had it happen a few years ago after trailering it home on rough roads. I got home and fuel was all over the trailer, and I couldn't figure it out. Guessing the rough ride hung the float open.

I can promise you the fuel will be drained out of the bowl from here on out when we store it.

Put sta-bil in your tank and will not have any problems.
