I have about 40 acres of seedlings that I planted in January. The tract had been windrowed so I did not do any site prep spraying. As I expected I how have plenty of competition starting to come up. I'm planning to spray the whole tract in late August/early September. I have done this a time or two in the past and used just Arsenal with decent results. Since many of the members here are in the forestry business I wanted to know if there was a better herbicide or mix of herbicides that I should use.

Competition includes gums (primarily), some privet, youpon, something that looks like myrtle, I'm sure there are morning glory vines in there somewhere, and probably briars too. The tract is in Pike County and its pretty sandy. I will be spraying with my boom less tractor setup (200 gallons at a time).

All of the herbicide discussions that have been on here in the past I thought for sure someone would have some input.

Interested as well, but for long leaf.

16oz Arsenal is the go to release method. You can add Escort/Oust to the mix also. Good luck doing any good on killing yaupon with a release. Yaupon has to be dealt with before tree planting.

As far as Longleaf goes you can’t really release it, everything has to be just right or it will make it sick/kill it.

Several years ago I had a tract that was planted without site prep so we tried over spraying it with a light Imazapyr the second year. I can't remember the mixture, but we didn't have a lot of success with it.. Basically made a jungle. I'll ask a guy tomorrow if he has any suggestions.

You can release longleaf with arsenal after a full year in the ground.

Well I placed my order today. Planning to use Arsenal AC (actually Alligare 4SL) and going to add some Escort XP to the mix this time. I've sprayed just Arsenal over seedlings 3 times in the past with pretty decent results, hopefully this will be at least as good.

I agree with others that Arsenal is the go to at 16 ounces per acre, especially if you have a lot of sweetgum. If you have poplar you may want to increase the rate up to 20 oz per acre. Adding 1 ounce of Escort per acre will help with blackberry, elm and some others that Arsenal will not get. You are not going to kill yaupon or wax myrtle with Arsenal. You would have to wait until the trees are old enough to spray under them and use a Garlon product to get any waxy stuff that you want to kill.

Scrubbuck, you have to be a little more careful with longleaf. I've seen damage from Arsenal on sandy sites. Some guys recommend going to a lower rate of 10-12 oz per acre. It won't be as effective but better than killing your trees.
