We recently lost a member of my wife's family to Stage 4 colon cancer.

Colon cancer is the most survivable cancer, provided it is addressed early. I am personally a survivor of Stage 1. I had zero symptoms until my doc found it through a colonoscopy. Resection without radiation, and I am 7 years clean.

There are some great people on this site, and y'all need to get checked regularly. My best friend is alive today because he got checked early for prostate cancer.

And if you still smoke, dip, or chew, please figure out how to quit. Cancer of the throat, mouth, stomach, and lungs is not nearly as easy to address, and much less survivable.

Just my PSA for the day.

Good PSA for the day.

Working in the medical field, I have seen a ton of folks with Colon Cancer that could have been treated earlier and been a lot less invasive/painful had they been screened sooner. This is one procedure where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

One guy I remember specifically wouldn't have a colonoscopy, and started having bleeding. When his colonoscopy was done, he had a huge cancerous mass that required surgery along with a colostomy. Was unsure if the colostomy was going to be permanent or not, had to wait until surgery to see how much colon was going to have to be removed and if the cancer had spread any. This fella was 56. Had he done his preliminary screening at 50, a lot of this could be avoided and he most assuredly would not be facing the possibility of having to $hit in a bag attached to the side of his stomach for the rest of his life. GET IT DONE. Standard age is 50. If you have a strong family history of Colon Cancer, Colon Dx, etc. Most insurances will pay for the screening at age 45.

Good advice. I would also say that in addition to those changes in lifestyle there are several dietary changes that can greatly reduce the risk of cancer. Mostly though it's too late to fix it by diet because by the time a doctor can see it,it may have been growing for 10 years..

Had someone close to me diagnosed with sage 4 colon cancer last year. 42 years old. Chemo, radiation and both liver and colon required surgery. Fortunately, they beat it. It’s important to know your family history and to share it with those down the line. Getting checked is easy. It’s the prep part that sucks. It ain’t no joke. Get checked.

I echo the get checked early and regularly. Getting checked for me caught prostate cancer early. A colonoscopy found pre cancerous polyps.

The key to surviving is early detection. Anything that seems out of place or abnormal should be shown to a doctor.
A scan Ct or Pet will reveal cancer, but it is accompanied with an IV of radioactive sugar solution. Cancer cells attract sugar and that causes the scan to light up in areas with cancer cells. Please stop using tobacco get checked regularly. Cancer is the devil. Even if you are told you are cured or cancer free, You still have to continue to get checked, it has a tendency to return.
