anything with a Honda emblem on it they also make electric shifts cheaper than automatic you shift on the left handle bar id rather be able to put it in the gear I want and it stay there than have an automatic plus less stuff to break or go wrong. a Honda Rancher with electric shift would last you forever. What he said!

What he said! except for that dam sensor that is notorious for going out but its a $15-$20 part and easy as changing a spark plug thats why I bought the foot shift its bullet proof

I ve had 2 Yamaha grizzlys an I think they better than Honda. I’m a diehard Honda fan also but for a utility 4x4 atv the Yamaha is way more easier to drive. Belt drive with gear shifter just like a car.compression braking . 2 4x4 buttons. One for 4 wheel drive an one to lock every wheel together.has a very low center of gravity especially for full independent suspension.had an 04 which was called a Kodak then . Had 6,000 miles on it . Never a problem. Got a 14 now with already over 6000 miles. No problem but replace tires an change oil.i live next to hunting club an ride mine almost every day.the Honda also are very durable. I’ve had many Honda dirt bikes over the years an there’s nothing better. but the shifting an the comfort on Yamaha atv sold me. Go to a dealer an ride them all

I have a 2015 rancher with the dcs (auto/selectable) gears and independent rear suspension . It has been flawless and has been great riding machine. Very stable and could easily be handled with only the right leg and hands.

Buy yourself a Honda Rubicon and you'll never need another 4 wheeler. Mine is a 2005 model that I purchased new in 2005. It has two options for shifting. Put it in D1 or D2 and just ride/drive it. It shifts itself automatically. Put it in ESP mode and you can shift it manually via a electronic shift switch on the handlebars. The engine oil is the same oil that is used by the transmission. I have never had one minutes problem out of mine other than a mouse chewing one of the wires up that went to the ESP switch.
I love my Rubicon. I'm positive you would like one as well.

I'm pretty sure I'll end up with both a 4 wheeler and a side by side eventually.
We have a shared off-road golf cart at deer camp but at home I can't imagine getting to many of the creek, forested places I go in a side by side. A side by side would definitely be more comfortable but I'm mainly looking for one to limit my walking..lots of small creek areas, etc.
For the price of a new Gator I'll get a dedicated farm truck or jeep. if you're gonna haul anything get a 4WD Kawasaki Mule with a dump/lift bed. I was in the same boat as you, 'cept the prosthetic part- no idea what I needed or wanted. Got a Mule and a Polaris 4-wheeler (tax refund) at the same time. I drive the 4 wheeler now just for kicks, but I use the heck out of that Mule. a 4wheeler a'int gonna be easy to drive with a prosthetic..(my opinion) but that Mule is a Cadillac easy to drive and STRONG! I can pull over 1000 lbs with it and haul at least that much in the bed. its a mini pickup, 2 forward gears and reverse..2 12 outlets for spotlight or inverter for low power operations, or throw a generator in the back if you need lots of power somewhere remote. its awesome...highly recommended. gun rack, roof, windscreen are options I got...all come in very handy

Anything to absolutely avoid?
Kawasaki highly disagree...I'm using My Mule like it was a C10 pickup, no problems in 200+ hours in the last 5-6 months...and It wasn't new but still under warranty. maybe if I break it I'll change my mind but its a beast and I got no complaints.

Asked my trusted ATV mechanic who made the best ATV years ago. He said Honda. As many different brands as he saw a month come in and out of his one man shop I felt like he might know something about the subject.

I think I posted this before when this was a hot topic before deer season last year--we bought our Mule and Polaris at Adams Motorsports in Montgomery. the shop guy told us the MOST repairs that come in there place is Polaris. Now, this my be because they sell the crap out of them so thats the most on the streets, or it may be because of failure rate..Unknown. we bought the Polaris ATV and the Mule side by side...I haven't put 50 hours on the Polaris, but the Mule I use an hour a day easy.

Yamaha for me. Go to a stealership and test drive a Honda and Yamaha that are the same size. Then you’ll know what you need to go find for sale on Craigslist. and be patient while searching for what you want. There are so many ATV’s for sale these days that you won’t have any problem finding what you’re looking for.

Honda Pioneer 500 is only 50 inches wide...barely wider than most large 4 wheelers nowadays....and comfortably seats two grown men.
Like said above, switchable from automatic to manual transmission, with paddle shifters. True shaft drive...no dang belts to slip and replace.

I have one and love it. It’s really the best of both worlds. Compact like a atv but comfortable and like a side by side. Plus it’s cheap compared to a lot of its competitors to include regular atv’s.
