School me on it. Headed to the in-laws later this week. They live on a lake and have a pontoon. Lake is pretty good sized, but does not have much of a current. What do I need to look for and how do I need fish to target cats? We have caught some decent ones off their dock, but I feel like there are some monsters in the deeper water.

How many acres? I'm not a pro cat fisherman, but I know some who are. They use cutbait or live bait for the biguns. And the location and structure depends on what type cats youre after. Does the lake have any bait fish you can catch to use as cutbait? If nothing else you could catch some bluegill to use.

111 acres. Finding baitfish for cutbait shouldn’t be an issue.

On lakes without much current, the thermocline layer will kick in during the summer. It is usually around 20 - 25 feet. So I wouldn't fish deeper than that. Find a old creek channel and drift along the edge of it. Keep bait suspended about 3 feet of the bottom..

Probably going to be more channels and a few yeller mud cats in that type of lake. I'd stick with worms maybe hot dogs. Try different depths. You will be surprised how many cats you can catch shallow. I'd look for a large flat with a channel close by and anchor on the ledge .
