I'll bet you anything FEMA is pushing the city to levy fines. This stinks of FEMA bullschit. I've dealt with FEMA for more than 30 years, on storm jobs from Oklahoma to New Jersey, and I've never seen them do anything but cost people money. Nothing good whatsoever. When that F5 hit in 2011 I had to get some stuff done to our house. Insurance covered it all but FEMA had setup about a mile from my house because it was just about the path of the tornado. FEMA kept calling me and wanting me to fill out for aid so they could give me money since I was eligible due to where I lived. I explained to them that my insurance covered all the damages and they still wanted me to fill out paperwork for money. It was crazy. No wonder this country is in debt up to our eyeballs. My mom and dad lost their house in that storm. FEMA told them they weren't eligible for anything, as they had insurance. All the folks around them not responsible enough to have insurance got big bucks, plus lots of free stuff from other organizations.

Have you been down there? Everything is a war zone 9 months later. There’s $1m houses that still don’t have steps rebuilt to access the homes on piles. Labor is non existent. It was tough to find people before the storm and now half of them moved off and the amount of work increased 20x. I was talking to a restaurant owner Saturday who had to rebuild his whole place himself because he couldn’t get any subs. And that’s a local. It took my dad 8 months to get his homes back up and running. The same amount of work would have taken 6 weeks in Birmingham. So yes, prices are very high, it’s either do it yourself or pay a sky high price and don’t expect it completed in a timely manner. These are the same kinds of stories we are hearing and seeing. What was the name of the restaurant? Skullys, it’s a hole in the wall place on the cape. There is evident damage from north of Panama City all the way to Apalachicola. 90% of trees are broken off and homes damaged between Panama City and st joe.

All the folks around them not responsible enough to have insurance got big bucks, plus lots of free stuff from other organizations. The amount of money that FEMA had to hand out was determined by county. I was in Limestone county (still am) and we had an incredible amount of damage so they had all this money to give out. Well most people up here had insurance so nobody was taking the FEMA money from what I could tell. I never understood the divvying up by county thing. Just put the money where it needed to go. Phil Campbell was absolutely destroyed but since it was very rural down there, there wasn't a huge dollar amount associated with the damage and they didn't get a ton of money from FEMA. It was a Charlie Foxtrot of the highest order.

I would guess the folks doing that type work down there right now are charging more because they can. I would take a couple days off work load up my chainsaw go down and do it myself. However most folks are not going to do that so they charging a premium. Supply and demand simple as that.
If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

You better check with the city before you have a contractor pile it up at the road. Some city’s will not pick up unless the homeowner is the one who cut and moved it there And they'll fine you again...
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

They wouldn’t pick my 2 big hackberrys up because “it looked like a professional did it”, I said well thanks for the compliment, but I did it. They charged based on how many loads it took. Went on my trash/water bill

Some city’s will not pick up unless the homeowner is the one who cut and moved it there And they'll fine you again... Mrs. Irish talked to the city today. She told them we were working to get into "compliance." She told them some of the contractors were going to just pile up the cup up trees and stumps by the road. The City told her that as long as it was "organic material" the City would pick it up and haul it off.

I lived in Central Florida several years back when all those hurricanes came through. Had a neighbor that had a big live oak blown over in her front yard. She paid $13,000.00 to have it sawn up and placed next to the road. I saw the invoice. I always wondered how Gray's tree and roof guys were driving around in customized ford raptors and f250 platinums, now I know.

id call and get a lot of quotes. Ive learned dealing with any kind of labor related jobs, trees, lot cleanups, fencing etc that prices can and will vary greatly. And as already said you could probably get a crew from somewhere else to go down and do it cheaper. They are probably swamped with work down there and getting premium prices where a guy im middle Al may be slack right now and looking for work.

Florida is so ridiculous with regulations and having permits to to a job i dont doubt it. an inspector has to come out 3 times just to put a roof on. on top of that you have to have a hand full of permits to even start. they come after tear off, then after felt is applied because felt has to have so many nails placed so far apart which is pointless because shingles go over it. then they have to come inspect the finished roof alot of waiting involved a 1 day job turns into 3 but the pay also increases 4-5x we used to make over $2000 a week after the hurricanes. supply and demand demand is high and the regulations keep the supply low it is what it is.

I hate to accuse them of it, but it sounds like the city might have a contractor on retainer and they are using an excessive fee to compensate/supplement for some other work shortages. It'd be pretty bold and criminal to do that, but it's been done before.
not sure what the best way to handle them is but they shouldnt be on tv and gettn married and raisin kids

It'd be pretty bold and criminal to do that, but it's been done before. Highly unlikely. It’s hard to grasp the situation if you haven’t seen it. There isn’t 1 out of 10 structures in Mexico beach that is habitable at this point and the hurricane happened in October. A lot of Mexico beach was old beach bum types that don’t particularly have the money to rebuild/didn’t have insurance/insurance settlements that are being made quickly are not near covering the costs. The city is trying to move the rebuild and cleanup process along because they have 0 revenue if there aren’t any tourists. If they leave it be, it will still look like a warzone 5 years from now. And to complicate things everything will have to be brought up to current code, which will cost 2x.
