Regardless of what you call them, the old porcupine quills were the best option but only the bigger ones.

I'm old enough and we were poor enough that we actually used corks as floats. So I grew up calling it a cork because that's what it was. When they came out with the red and white plastic floats, my grandfather didn't like them because he said they would scare the fish.
I still call them corks. I told my wife a while back to buy some plastic corks so we could take the grandchildren fishing. It's a term that will die out when my generation is gone.
I don't think I'm near as old as you but I remember gathering what we called corks for fishing. It was actually some kind of pulpy weed with a big knot on it. When broke off a little above and below the knot they looked a whole lot like the balsa wood floats that have a stick through them.

I guess gathering the quills was rough. My daddy had a couple when I was a kid.

I still have a couple floats made out if cork. Quills are awesome with crickets. The ones like are foam now were cork. Had a string in them to pull your line through. Were a nickel a piece. They made plastic quills that looked like real quills too.

When I started fishing, it was with my paw paw. He called them all corks. Plastic, wood, cork, everything but a quill was a "cork". Kinda like how every refrigerator was a "Frigidaire" or all dark soft drinks were a "coke" to the old folks. He had no use for a quill. A decent size "minner" would snatch a quill under. Oh, and it's hose pipe, not garden hose!....LOL

Cork is foam.
Bobber is the red and white plastic one
To me
Never said float in my life You gotta be kidding me. Cork is a type of WOOD. It used to plug ALL Bottles. The young are really brain dead. The word cork in relation to fishing is due to the fact that once they really were bottle corks, then the floats were made of CORK. Calling a piece of Foam a cork is no different from calling a Magazine a CLIP! I didn’t mean that cork is foam. I meant the word “cork” to me, signifies a foam “cork”. Slip cork, popping cork, etc. (all foam) I drink enough wine to know about corks and where they come from
