I just finished helping the local fire department put out a woods fire..... That I started.
To be more accurate, I think my truck muffler started it. But after attempting to beat it out with a pine top for 30 minutes I gave up and called the fire department.
You'd be amazed how quickly a small brush fire can get away in this dry condition.
Im totally exhausted now, but glad I called the fire department. I never would have gotten it under control by myself.

I saw the smoke plumes from my house. I thought you were trying to send a message.

I'll be heading to Jim's bbq in a bit. I'll bring a fire extinguisher.

I set a couple piles of scrap wood odd bout 20 years ago. Not even a pickup load. Wind started kicking up and I was losing ground trying to keep them both in check with a flat point shovel.. I called the local VFD and ask them to send one guy in the brush truck to help me. NOT. Next thing I know I'm hearing sirens from every direction. 2 trucks from each of the closest 3 stations showed up and at least a dozen guys. Two of them took the brush truck and had it out in 10 minutes. If I had a 100" hose I could have done it myself. Then they gave me a lecture.

I didn't get a lecture, they only thanked me for calling as soon as I did.
By the way, this did not occur anywhere near my house. If it had, I would have handled it myself with heavy equipment. But this was several miles away, and I didn't have any equipment handy.

I was on a job and the last thing to home owner said before he left that morning was "Don't burn up my hay field."

Isn't there a burn ban in effect now?

I don't think it applies to accidents.

I feel for you Outback. That happened to a friend and I many years ago. It amazed me how fast a brush fire can spread in dry conditions. Drinking all night didn't help. Woke up to flames near my tent. It took 3 hours to completely put out at night when campfire got out of control. Embers spread and it started to take off. Lucky my friend was a firefighter and we were able to get it in in control. I was beat after that. Crazy how fast it spreads. rofl rofl beers

It's scary how fast fire will move.
We've almost lost the house I've grown up in twice.

One of the people I leased from years ago required you to have a fire extinguisher mounted on a tractor or in vehicles while on his land due to him starting a fire bailing hay. Smart man, and I do it to this day even though I no longer hunt there.
