We live in the Deep South Dammit. Tell me why when you go to a grocery store like Publix or Winn Dixie (It even has "Dixie" in the damn name!) and all you can find are instant grits or 5 minute quick grits?

The South is truly dead.

Thank you!!! You can order some really good stone ground from the place in Helen, GA online:

Yeltons are good and they used to carry them at Publix, but not lately.

I like Lakeside brand yellow grits. I also add a half stick of butter and cream cheese to mine.

I know you can order them online, or go to a specialty store, or go to an actual grist mill, because I have done all of those things.

My point is: This is just one of the many signs of the death of Southern Culture, the fact that you can't by "real" grits at a southern grocery store anymore.

A lot of times the real grits are with the other Bob’s Red Mill products like almond flour and stuff.

Normally, that Bob's Red Mill stuff, although tasty, is polenta and not grits I believe.

Another thing. Grits need to be eaten with a fork not a spoon. Some folks just can't make them.

I've always bought regular grits at Publix in the past. I'm on our last package from the pantry right now. I'll check tomorrow. I agree, if regular grits aren't carried any longer that says something about the Southern consumer today. When you can buy sushi but not regular grits there's a problem. What's next? Cornbread and Crisco?

We generally keep and rotate lots of dried rice, beans, grits, cornmeal, flour, crisco, etc for emergency supplies for storms or other SHTF or Zombie Apocalypses.

You can carry your own corn to Fink's Mill near Hacoda, Alabama and get some good grits.

And I order them from McEwen --they ship to Oregon. Quick grits is paste--they remove the bran, germ, and endosperm. Before DDT and big food corporations, Southerners were eating whole grain organic grits and cornbread. And "pastured pork'', free-range chickens and eggs, heirloom veggies, etc. We gave it all up for convenient and cheap. We sold our birthright for a mess of processed pottage.
