This is a relative question and everyone has their own opinion. After shooting a few different calibers for a few years I decided the .308 was the caliber that performed best for myself and my type of hunting. I am currently shooting a Browning Abolt stainless with 22" barrel.

Fill it with Winchester White Box 240 gr. SP's.

I like it. But would vote .44 magnum Ruger carbine. 240 grain of course. Open sights too no scope. My first deer rifle.

You should be able to push those 120s past 3500fps. I’m getting almost 3300 with the 150s. (R22, 64.5g with a COAL of 3.3385)

I’m loading 74.5grs of re22 with a 24” barrel, no pressure signs and shoots 1/2” 3 shots, really no need for any more though I feel I could get 3500 easily. I don’t go off col length, I measure chamber and seat off the ogive, seating these .060” off the lands at 2.730”.

No pressure signs what so ever and it’s EXTREMELY accurate. It’s a Carolina Precision built Remington 700 action with a 26” Barrel. I seat off the lands too but with the Barnes they are nowhere near as picky as the Bergers. I’d have to go through my notes to see exactly what the jump is.

I prefer the 7mm08. Just my .02, and all the ones mentioned will work, but my question is why would you handicap yourself using a short range rifle? True you can kill deer at 200 yards with a 30-30 or 45-70 less with a .44, but as good as they kill can still be at a disadvantage. 45-70 has a brutal recoil.

its fun and i can never see more than a 100 yards usually 50 or 60 max. ive got other rifles if i want to shoot further but i cant remember the last deer i shot that couldn't have been killed with iron sights and a 3030

We will burn that bridge when we get there

Brush-buckin' calibers is a myth.....Buckshot will go CRAZY when it hits a SMALL Limb....much less a rifle bullet. I'm 60 years of age....have taken probably 200 plus Deer with my BLR .243------find a 6" hole in the Brush and punch it in!!

I've killed a few with my savage 110 in .270 and as many with my rem 7600 30-06 but they almost always run 40-100 yards even with a double lung/heart shot. I just got a 45/70 I'm itching to try in the woods. which load should I use? i wanted to pick up some buffalo bore hot loads for it, didnt know if I should go with the 300 or 400 grain

3300 FPS is VERY fast for 150 gr bullets in 7mm Remington mag. Do you need two hands to open the bolt. grin

I've seen a berger 140 hit a target like a shotgun pattern. Apparently trying to push them above 3600 doesn't work well. A buddy had a good long conversation with Brian Litz about the subject. His question was, "why would anyone want to build a 300 wby improved?" laugh

A good question since a 300 Weatherby is essentially a 300 H&H magnum improved.

I’ve got a Winchester Featherweight Model 70 7mm-08. It is money. Also got a Remington 700 in 7mm-08. Money too. Both are topped with 50mm Vortex scopes.

If that's the Rem 700 7-08 you bought from Justin it has been money for a long time, it's killed several and carries SO well.
