I like to toy around with the idea of buying a long range rifle. For anyone that’s shot long range before you know that there’s plenty of guns that can shoot 0-500, still a pretty good bit that can do 500-750, but once you creep beyond that 750 mark there’s only a select few that get the job done. So what’s y’alls opinion on the best 500-1000 yard caliber/gun to take a deer with..... I’ve always referred to them as my cutover gun.

I’m going all in with the.300 WSM but can be easily swayed towards a few other rounds I have in mind.

7 Mag would be my suggestion. There are others like a 300 Win or Weatherby mag. Then you get into stupid land like .30-378 or bigger. Someone is going to claim 6.5 Creedmoor but to me I want that energy level still around 1,000 at that distance to really pound whatever I hit. To me that is more important at distance shooting because of the probability of a marginal shot. If you are serious about connecting with a deer at that distance you need to let that sink in.

Several others can do it including .30-06 with heavy bullets. 7 Mag is hard to beat though the recoil and all that ain't that bad.

I’d agree with the above but I’m not sure where the minimum expansion velocity is for appropriate hunting bullets for the outside edge of that range. If it were me, and it isn’t, I’d jump on up to .338 Lapua or .50bmg and be done with it. Use the same rig at 700 that you can at 1500.

For deer at 1000 id go with 300's or 338

Gunsite or Thunder Ranch for 7 days so ya can hit at 873 yards plus Arizona&Oregon's pretty country. Far as actual 1K rifles I'd look into Hornady's .300 prc .30-378 wby or .375 cheytac .416 Barrett or .50 Bmg.

Skinny is my EX.Alcohol was involved.

What’s your budget range? There’s a lot of rifles out there nowadays that can pretty consistently send them accurately. Your glass is going to be a very important part of the equation and not going to be cheap. As far as the cartridge 300wsm is not a bad choice but I’d probably lean towards a 300win simply for the fact there’s a lot more ammo off the shelf if you need it. If I were going to reload all and wanted to kill stuff out that far I’d probably go 7mm ultra or 338 Lapua.

Interesting topic..

Keep the in mind that hitting a static target at 1000 takes lots of practice to be consistent, along with excellent equipment. Shooting game (deer here) ethically requires that you can put a round into a 6” circle at that distance while factoring wind drift and drop. Out there, factors like temp and humidity and altitude begin to have an effect that we can mostly ignore when shooting 300-500(wind being more variable here). Add that your target is likely as not to move.

I’d want a round that bucks the wind handsomely as well as anchoring the animal where it stands. 500 -1000 yards is a long way to go to start looking for your deer.

The 300 WSM would be a good choice as would several others mentioned. And you must practice at these distances. I believe having enough velocity at impact to expand the bullet is important, and bullet construction really comes into play beyond 600 yards. And you must practice. 1/2 moa accuracy is virtually a must for such shots also, so custom guns and fine tuned handloads can go a long way in this regard. And you must practice. Good quality optics with reliable, repeatable turrets are needed.

Did I mention practicing at these distances?

Deer? A fast twist 7-08, 6.5-06/284 or 280 all AI, Just shooting deer to 800 or so and targets past that, a fast twist 243AI or regular 6.5 creedmoor will do. Bullets and popped primers matter way more than headstamps, case capacity, or belts when stretching that far.

Regardless of chosen *suitable* cartridge, good bullets, good handloading, and good practice would be paramount.

Just for the record fellas.... I don’t know anyone that can shoot with me and I would never take a shot on an animal over 700 yards period and even at that distance it has to be perfect conditions. I really just wanted to see what calibers you all had in mind

If one’s what you believe, and the other is your limit for deer, then a 1:7-8 twist 243AI or creedmoor will do what you’re asking, with the most efficiency.

Yup and with the least amount of recoil, wear, and expense.
Most of the PRS shooters have moved to 6MM flavored cartridges.

In that case I would get a 28 Nosler. Or a 338 Edge. Or a... grin
