Not only are our deer sightings off a lot, I don't know of any of our members seeing an armadillo on our lease this year. Last year, I would see one most every day of hunting. We have seen where they have been digging in the leaves some, but no live sightings. This is Winston County. What's up with that? Also, can/will coyotes kill an armadillo?

Come to think of it, we are usually covered up in them and I haven't even seen one dead on the highway.

I havent seen one in a few years. Sure seems fishy that the coyote population goes up and the dilla population goes down....if the are being eaten by yotes then they have to be the easiest target ever....a person can walk right up on em.

we were talking about that this weekend, got to be the coyote. that or someone from Auburn tagged a bunch of baby armadillos, they died from being improperly handled, and THEN the coyote ate them.

In the part of Walker co I live in the last 2 or 3 years the armadillos have disappeared use to see them everywhere now none. Where I hunt Fayette Co haven't seen one all year but not sure if they were there before or not first year hunting there. Not sure if something ate them or they got some kind of disease that wiped them out.

They are all at my place outside of Arley. Last Saturday afternoon after listening to three of them for two hours I finally pulled out the pistol and disposed of them. I have put down 16 or so since summer. They have completely run off the turkey in the last 3 years. Odd thing is that I see them out in the middle of the day in the greenfields.

I saw my first live Alabama armadillo earlier in gun season. He was about three benches up the mountain I was surprised to see one especially up high like that.

I don't understand the part about them running off turkeys. I know they can tear up a nest and maybe even catch a poult if he got wet or something but how do they run them off?

When we shoot them in late afternoons on the sod farm, the Meskin workers come out and pick them up to eat.

I know you've heard the old term, "possum on the half shell"?

Do you guys think the liberal limit and over harvest of armadillas is the reason for this ?

Still haven't heard from anyone that says they know that coyotes eat them. That's what I'm trying to figure out. If that's the case, the coyotes must have caught all the deer they can and started on the armadillos at our place. That would explain why some folks have seen many and others have seen very few or none. And then the disease theory could also apply. I ain't missing them cause I love them, I'm just trying to figure out more about what's going on.

I read an article somewhere saying the coyote basically came to the southeast following the armadillo. This was there food supply in order to migrate from the west. Then when the yote got established here armadillos keep them alive when food is low.

I went from seeing 2 per hunting trip to only seeing two all season. They used to be in the yard, around my shop, etc. Don't know what's happened to them. My son shot a couple with his bow last summer. I don't even see dillo grease spots in the highway anymore.

Just think, if they extend the season two weeks into February down here in the south, it could wipe out the male armadillo population here. That in turn would adversely effect the male to female ratio up in the northern counties further jeapordizing the plight of the already struggling Alabama Armadillo.

I can't remember ever seeing one where we hunt in Macon County.
