Dont know if it works the same way with deer as it does horses, but I'm sure it's at least somewhat similar, but if the buck lost his nuts in some sort of accident/attack by predator, they can still have the desire to breed/chase, and even can go through the action of breeding bc they still have what I've heard a vet call a "squealer."

I shot a buck about 30 years ago without cods. He had spikes about 9" long. Still in velvet and a lot of strange cartilage like growth around the base of his antlers. I'm guessing he was born that way. Not sure about age or weight. He was following a group of does but it was not chasing activity.
