My little sister (13 y/o) has recently decided she is interested in hunting. I’m home for the holidays so I decided to take her out to shoot some squirrels on some public land. She got three and was so pumped. It was awesome to see her so excited.

A little back story: two of my sisters are adopted from China, and this sister was born with only one arm. If she wants to do something, she 100% will figure out how to make it work. She would look and find the squirrels through the binoculars and then I’d kneel down and she’d shoot the 10/22 off my shoulder. It worked pretty alright, but we probably could have had way more if she had a faster way to do it. Any suggestions on that? I’m thinking maybe a .22 pistol with a site or something.

Anyway, it was a great time, I forget how fun small game hunting is and even more how fun introducing people is to hunting.

I got a picture but can’t get it to post from my phone, I’ll post it later.

Good times!!

Use a scope with a wide field of view instead of using binos. Some type of bipod or shooting stix attached to gun, she would probably need to kneel or sit to shoot. Find an area where the squirrels are using and sit and wait, shoot one, mark it and wait the others will come back out. Take her to the range and practice before going.

Wow. I haven’t been squirrel hunting since I was a teenager with a .410. I’m not too sure I could have that much luck with a .22 and couldn’t imagine with only one arm.

Great pic. Have you tried using a tall tri-pod like a bog pod? If you are carrying it for her it can be set up pretty quick. Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah, I need to get out there with her and Beadlescomb, but anytime I go with him I don't see any squirrels, I think I'm bad luck rofl

I think I'm going to try a mono/bipod next time, the only thing with that is I know eventually she will want to move on to being able to do it all herself. That's why I was thinking the pistol, but we will try it out and go again. I think after shooting at a range some, she'd be ready to try deer hunting. Already excited for next season...

Problem with most off the shelf mono pods is even with your help, they are meant to aim at eye level basically and not up into a tree, guess she could kneel and use it. Maybe something where you can have it attached already like a sling stud bi pod and it can just swing down and rest on her waist or something.

How about a mini Mossberg 500 in .410. They're so short and light, with a little practice you could probably shoulder and fire it one-handed, and you wouldn't have to be quite as precise as with a .22?

Thompson Center makes a 15” pistol barrel in .410. Easy to tote and great for squirrels. I’ve killed many with mine.

tall, lightweight bipod. you could make one from bamboo or cane and paracord. make it to her height so she can aim up. she's a lovely girl, to boot. what a smile ...
