OK... So I've never found an actual arrow head. Of course I haven't hunted for them all that much either. The reason for this is the same reason that I don't gamble or play the lottery. It seems like such a long shot. Here's why I think like that...
On one hand searching for an arrow head would be like trying to find a random stray bullet in the forest without a metal detector. On the other hand I guess you might find a cache of them in some old village where a knapper was trying to make a bunch of them and kept discarding ones he didn't like. Tossing them away in one spot.
Am I missing something here? I mean if I invited you to go out in the woods and go hunting bullets, you would look at me like I was crazy, yet people go arrow head hunting all the time. It would seem to me that the chances of finding either would be about equal. Yet I know that people find them all the time. Of course people win at gambling too...

Me and Travis had shoe boxes full of them from when we would find then when we were younger.
It always amazed me at how many arrow heads there are out there. Damn injuns must have dropped those things as quick as they could make them.

I've never found one either. Walked through many a plowed field too. Gotta look down while you're walking.

That's kind of my point and it's being missed in this thread. It would seem to me that finding one would be so random. If you think about it logically there shouldn't be one, but for every so many square miles. But apparently that's not the case, because people find them all the time. I guess the reason is that indigenous people have been using them for thousands of years and losing lots of them along the way.

it's only random if you don't know what yer doing. Yes, you can find one at some random spot...or you can find a bunch at long term village sites.
When I lived near Moundville I found dozens of points along the river, in specific spots.. Guy I hunted points with could look at a top map, pick a spot, and go find several points at that spot.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

What kind of numbers, at a particular part of time was the population of the indigenous people? I'm sure someone like Skinny could chime in and give an estimate to a particular period of time. It should be completely rare and random, but is very far from it at times. The best arrow head I ever found was laying in some sandy soil after a strong rain 10 feet from our driveway. Completely random and it shouldn't have been there to of been found, but it was.

I know some that are fanatics and will even trespass on a rained on plowed field, if they know a vein runs through the area. we used to find them pretty regularly around a camp I was in, but there was a mound on the property so it made sense we were near a vein. never found any on the mound...mostly in runoff ditches and ag fields along those ditches. true arrowhead/ artifact hunters use a probe (most are old metal antennas from cars, sharpened to a point).
experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

What's your experience hunting points around bluff areas? Wife's family has several miles of bluff property that I plan to search out after hunting season. There are some areas that, at one time, could have been nice overhangs or shelters, but they have crumbled and fell in on themselves. South/ Southeast facing
