I’ve always wanted to shoot one but I’m not paying that much money for something you can’t even eat. From everything I’ve read they taste absolutely horrible I've killed 6 in the last 3 years and eaten some of 2 others, all were just as good or better tasting (my wife says) than whitetail - don't overcook it. We have skinned, quartered and packed the meat out and got it in coolers quickly which I'm sure helps the quality of the meat. I think some lazy "hunters" don't take the meat out 'cause its a bitch and use "It's inedible" as an excuse. Haven't gotten the old, rutty, chapped ram to try yet - going to try again in Feb- but I'm sure they aren't as good on the table. My free-range aoudad hunts in the Texas mountains for wild, not corned sheep have been as physically demanding as any of the western hunts I've done for antelope, mule deer, elk, or caribou. they're a cool animal in some beautiful country

The young ones are “ok” table fare but from my experience; the mature rams that I’ve targeted aren’t very good to eat.

We had a guy that used to come to Alabama to hunt with us that had a ranch leased in W. Texas. It had big deer and Aoudad, javelina and hogs. Every year he would reciprocate with an invite for us to come hunt with him. I never got around to it because he had all the bucks on camera at feeders and dictated which ones we could shoot and not shoot. Understandably, he put the best ones, and they were really good, off limits except for his Grandsons. I expressed an interest in an Aoudad, which he said I was welcome to come hunt but his stipulation on those was the hunter had to agree to a full body mount, which with two young kids at the time was not in my future. Plus, I have nowhere to display a whole sheep. He says they are much bigger and tougher than you think. He won't let anyone hunt one with less that a 300 cal.
On a side note, the last time I talked to him he lost 95% of his deer, sheep, etc., from Anthrax. I can't say this was because of feeders but if you know how Anthrax is spread, then you know the feeders certainly made it easier to spread to the whole population. He showed me pictures of big, huge Texas racked deer just rotting. He advised that it was illegal to pick them up and move them.
A real nice guy that lives and works (if he still does) in Houston but had the ranch in W. Texas. He was a welder that made his money by being able to do some kind of specialized welding that very few others could do. Don't know exactly as he didn't discuss it much except it wasn't underwater welding as I have heard that is very highly specialized.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Just something that I've never had interest in at all. Then why reply on the thread at all? I don't even click on threads of which the subject matter holds no interest to me, let alone take the time to formulate a reply that they don't. I find this baffling. Do you just want to see your name on the thread? Trying to get your post count up? There are certain people on here competing to be the biggest old fart possible, as in "I'd never do that in the stand, etc." but I never thought I'd see you doing that.

Why would anyone want to shoot one of those? Looks fun to me Kip Campbell and the RedArrow guys hunted them a few weeks ago, and it looked awesome. It got me to googling it, I’d love to bow hunt them

RobertD, as I remember Bob said a commander of WSMR had them brought in and released many years ago and they really thrived. I guess it's perfect habitat for them. My understanding it's about 100% success , if the hunter can shoot. Cool looking critter.
