So I’ve got some greenfields on my lease and they grew fantastically after planting with all the rain we had. Well the deer never touched them I’m assuming due to acorn drop so now my fields are Pretty tall and the grass is tough. Any suggestions? I’ve heard of people trimming the green field but don’t know what to do about it.

Mine were the same way 3 weeks ago probably 7 inches tall came check them today they are about 3 inches tall. So I’m thinking the acorn crop around me is drying up. But as far as trimming the plots I don’t know never saw it done

Echoing Doe here, my plots had gotten pretty dang tall when I last saw them two weeks ago. Since then something has switched and the deer are hammering them. When I shot my buck Sunday night they were grazed down to 1-2" in most areas. Gonna dose them with N on the next rain.

Y'all want to mow a food plot?

Quit overthinking all this and just go hunt.

Mowing plots, "educating" deer leaving a stand, if you get a dip will the scent scare them, can't make a sound or they'll leave.

Dammitman, just go hunting. They'll eat your planted baitplot and you'll see and shoot deer.

agreed, but face it - we live in a "Google It" world - folks would rather ask Q's online than learn through first-hand experience ... ALDeer is like the Google for hunting Q's/searches

never heard of a green field growing too well learn something new everyday on here. cut it with the zeroturn set on 1.5 if you really feel the need you wont have to worry about it growing much after that

The only plots I have ever mowed were clover plots and that is during the offseason. They will eventually come and eat your plots. Just let there be a few more nights in the 30's and all the acorns drop and they will be mowing them down unless you planted something that is not desirable to them. And, of course, I assume you have a healthy deer herd on your place. I say that because, I used to hunt with a buddy and his plots were always 8-10" tall, and I never saw a deer or deer tracks when I went with him and they very seldom killed any deer but they went through all the motions, but probably only had 10-15 deer per square mile.

A guy that works at marks outdoors told me if i dipped in the treestand i might as well not even worry about scent control because deer know what dip smells like and associate it with humans. I took these pics to prove him wrong. These pics were taken in January of last year and there wasn’t an acorn in sight. I witnessed these deer actually licking my dip spit. I thought i was going to have to shoot the spike because at one point he actually bit and picked up my strap that i use to secure my treestand together out of that hole. I was not walking a mile out of the woods without a strap but he dropped it fairly quickly and ended up finally working his way out of there.[Linked Image][Linked Image]

scatter some corn in the plot and they'll mow the plot down some. or you could top sow some wheat before the next rain to get some new growth. or both. because the deer will trample the other seed in the ground eating the corn.
