Probably be a few days till he can hunt that stand again. Glad he is ok.

The older I get the more I've grown to dislike tree stands. That poor guy in Oregon hung for two days.

HSS vest, connected from the ground up. The vest has 2 chest pockets, always cell phone in the left & sharp knife in the right. I let someone know where i am climbing.

When I was a about 16 my dad and uncles were in a club in Camp Hill with some guys that had a stand called “Stanley’s Island”…..The stand was an old school climber on a tall straight pine tree. They had a 50 ft rope attached to it and would climb until the rope ran out. I went down there one day with the idea that I was about to climb it and go all the way to 50 ft ……I was climbing it like a champ until I got to probably around 35 ft….That’s when it hit me and I slowed way down and started just taking…”one more step”……I’d look down and think about it for a minute and then take “one more step”…..I made it to about 45 ft before finally just saying piss on this……

The article never mentioned the guys age. I don't see myself hanging there waiting for help. Been there done that and helped myself.

40' up a tree seems a little excessive (and by "a little", I mean really excessive....stupid, even)
Why? If you need to get up 40’ to see over stuff, or be above the deer on the ridge, you climb up 40’.

It's only advantageous to climb high if you are gun hunting. The higher you climb with a bow your shot picture decreases.

Still depends on the situation. I've been probably 40' in a tree, with the crest of a hill at eye level, just 30 yards away. In fact, that particular spot was one of my favorite stands.

It's only advantageous to climb high if you are gun hunting. The higher you climb with a bow your shot picture decreases. And you've seen the hills behind my house. There's a stand back there, right now, where you can climb 30' and still not be above the hill behind you, but you're 100' above the creek bottom.

40' up a tree seems a little excessive (and by "a little", I mean really excessive....stupid, even)
hunting on the edge of clear cuts on hilly terrain ive been over 60' my pull strung is 50' and ive climbed up and had my bag dangling 5 or 10' off the ground. its kind of relaxing to be up there and have that kinda view plus the deer cant smell you near as easy biggest deer ive ever killed ive killed on clearcut edges as high as the pine tree would let me get.

My biggest Alabama buck to date, I put 2 full sets of climbing sticks together which was 50’ up a pine tree and hung a gorilla tree stand. Had to hang 2 life lines too. Disconnect and connect half way up. Worked like a charm. Not sure I would do it again. getting old...
