that's why you climb with your safety rope attached to the tree

No doubt scary. Could've very well ended in tragic death. Lesson learned is always have your cell phone within reach and where your harness..

Probably be a few days till he can hunt that stand again. Glad he is ok.

The older I get the more I've grown to dislike tree stands. That poor guy in Oregon hung for two days.

40' up a tree seems a little excessive (and by "a little", I mean really excessive....stupid, even)

HSS vest, connected from the ground up. The vest has 2 chest pockets, always cell phone in the left & sharp knife in the right. I let someone know where i am climbing.

When I was a about 16 my dad and uncles were in a club in Camp Hill with some guys that had a stand called “Stanley’s Island”…..The stand was an old school climber on a tall straight pine tree. They had a 50 ft rope attached to it and would climb until the rope ran out. I went down there one day with the idea that I was about to climb it and go all the way to 50 ft ……I was climbing it like a champ until I got to probably around 35 ft….That’s when it hit me and I slowed way down and started just taking…”one more step”……I’d look down and think about it for a minute and then take “one more step”…..I made it to about 45 ft before finally just saying piss on this…… grin

Had a one time good friend that this happened to in a tree lounge. Hanging upside down for about 6 hours. Finally someone heard him screaming and rescued him. To hear him tell it would send chills down you spine.

It looks like a slick bark tree too.

Why? If you need to get up 40’ to see over stuff, or be above the deer on the ridge, you climb up 40’.

I've hunted from 8' to 60' or even higher. Depending on the situation.

It's only advantageous to climb high if you are gun hunting. The higher you climb with a bow your shot picture decreases.

Still depends on the situation. I've been probably 40' in a tree, with the crest of a hill at eye level, just 30 yards away. In fact, that particular spot was one of my favorite stands.

And you've seen the hills behind my house. There's a stand back there, right now, where you can climb 30' and still not be above the hill behind you, but you're 100' above the creek bottom.

On my old club which is now FW WMA land there was a huge pine tree with fresh cutover to the west and a food plot on a loading area to the NNW. I wanted to be able to cover both. Due to the terrain, the only way to do so was to go about 40-50 ft up that pine tree. I was in my early twenties and dumber than a sack of bricks because I rarely used a harness and if I did it was the old style that would have cut me in half if I actually fell. Hunted that tree many times; looking back I was a lucky sob.

These days its 20-25 feet strapped to the tree from the bottom with a rock climbing harness.

On a side note I saw the biggest buck I've ever seen on the hoof on that plot from that tree. I shot 5 rounds in his direction everyone of them probably hit short of his feet, because I sucked at yardage estimation then and I ain't much better now (rangefinder helps now for my distance challenged self). I thought it was about 200 yds away. Years later with the aid of the fancy new satellite technology i determined that plot was approx. 450 yards away, so the bullet drop was about 25" to 30". Face palm. He just stood there in the middle of the plot looking my way and I assume laughing his a#% off at me.
