Who laid out of work or school to go huntin' when it opened on Friday?

It was not near as crowded on opening day
back then ,,, always got me out of school!

I remember when the entire State regs were on one sheet of paper.

Yep, skipped a many day of school for first day!

Was moved from Friday before Thanksgiving to Saturday in '85 or '86 at the request of some schools.

I laid out of school when I was a senior , that would have been in 77 . Killed a scrub buck in a creek at the foot of Hi-Top, trouble is I was parked at the top of the mountain and hunting alone. I drug the deer from the foot to the top of Hi-Top . Then had a flat tire on the way home. Seemed like fun at the time.

The first gun hunt on Skyline WMA was always the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving , laid out many of those too.

Really? I only remember Saturday’s. I also remember when you were amazed when you saw a deer because there were so few. What years are you talking about? 1960’s?

In Jackson Co and I think it was also state wide prior to '85 or '86.

We were always out of school on opening day of deer season back when it opened on Friday....the teachers in Opp had "in service training" that day....most of the teachers would have been running dogs with the students anyway....them was the good ole days.

Yep I remember. My problem was we always made the playoffs and had a football game that night. So after the game me and my buddies would spend the night at my best buddies house. His daddy was the deer hunter and always took us boys opening weekend in Bullock county. We would pitch the tent and set up deer camp until Sunday evening. I miss those simple days.

Dad always had an excuse ready for us to give our teachers on Monday.

Yea. It was called I was sick.

Back then there were very few guys at school on opening day. We treated it like a national holiday. I miss the doe season being Dec 26-31 too.

I don't remember the day but I remember my dad checking me out for a week every year until I got to college since I was 7...fun times

My son misses every youth opener. I walked in wearing camo and she said Hunting. I responded “we were going to a play”. I can remember dad letting me stay out for the gun opener in the early to mid 80s. Wish it was still that way.

When I checked my son out Friday the excuse was he was sick. The school secretary and my wife are good friends. She said my son probly just needed some good ole fresh air to clear his illness up! Her husband hunts too. She knew. Not like anybody gives a rip

i was told one time if i laid out i would be fired . i shook his hand and told him it had been nice working with him . monday he came by the house and told me to have my ass at work the next day . lol

I guess I started with bow season back then. But for the life of me I cant remember it opening on Fridays.. Thats crazy.

I was a kid, middle school and high school. I had pretty good grades 8th grade year. I laid out like 8-9 days hunting with dad. Had a ball.
I remember being tore out of frame 9th grade year on a Friday opener. Dad got invite to go to south Alabama and I stayed home and went to school. Hunted a sucky close to home spot after school.

It was like that for sure through 1982 opener LOL We pretty well date ourselves by announcing stuff like this. No doctors excuse required back then either. Most of the coaches needed fresh air that day also.

Yes and was pissed when they changed it. We would stalk hunt on Friday and then dog hunt Saturday morning until lunch.

The reason it was changed , is the reason most of us remember it so well, kids laying out of School.

Sure do and wish it still did.

DAMMITMAN! That's a helluva drag! I hunted Carter Wildlife area and Skyline WMA from about 87 into the late 90s. That territory is for young men if you get more than half a bench down without an ATV.

I'm in good shape for my age, but that would kill me now. Long time ago I started huntin' smarter.

No telling how many times I wished the truck in front of me would speed up. My son and I killed tons of deer at Waterloo years ago. I haven't been back since Forever Wild bought the private lease we had. Just not the same as I look back on it now. Loved them good ole days with you guys. Take care and happy hunting this year.
