I have a 50lb Fleetwood takedown, I've been shooting for a while. Any tips on getting more consistent/better other than practice practice practice? Ive always been a compound guy but one day I'd like to get confident enough to hunt with it. It is a blast to shoot none the less.

I shoot with a split finger hold, bottom(third) finger at the corner of my mouth. This gets the arrow up and closer to my right eye, making it easier to hit at closer ranges, say under 20 yards. 90% of your shots hunting will be under 20 yards.

get close to the target and work on form, not trying to aim at a spot. Do this a lot, it will help your shooting a lot.

Thanks for the info! Hoping to get somewhat good at shooting it one of these days.

Dont give up, just takes time.
Spend some time close to the target executing the shot with good form.
Keep a stable bowhand...bowhand is more critical.
Get that push/pull goin.

Search for Rick Welch on youtube. You will learn more about shooting and more about how to make your arrows hit where you are looking.
But, first you have to have consistent form, this can't be stressed enough. Consistency like most everything else leads to repeatability. Just like what B'hamFred is saying. Poor form, poor release = poor accuracy and frustration!

On the upside it does making shooting a bow fun again after 35 years of shooting compounds and you will learn way more about how the arrows react than most ever learn shooting compounds.

Simmons broadheads, 175gr. They have a 2" cutting diameter. It's like throwing a hatchet through their ribs.

GO NOLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've used a lot of different kinds of heads over the yrs...Bear heads until the mid 80s, Satellite, Magnus, Ace, Muzzy, Thunderheads,Stos, Zwickey.
Last couple of yrs I've been using Wasp standard Hammer heads. Funny thing is I killed my first deer with a bow using a Wasp BH shooting a Bear Kodiak Magnum.
I think most heads will do the job as long as they fly good and providing they are sharp.

Simmons, Magnus, STOS, Zwickey all make good heads. I shoot 160gr STOS, good heads but tango the tips and keep em sharp.

Simmons interceptor, Treesharks and Landshark, depending which arrow spine and which bow I am shooting.

I shoot light draw weight, 50 lb. I shot simmons heads years ago,, I helped make them, but as ever one started shooting lighter heads to get more speed, so did I, but this year I went back to my old simmons heads, with hopes to improve penetration, I shot a deer 2 weeks ago with my simmons head, hit it behind the shoulder, center of chest, shot though both side of the rib cage, and stuck in the ground 3-4", deer went about 50 yds, and died!!, as advised by hunters on this site, heaver arrow and broadheads do penetrate well.

First, consistent anchor point. Doesn't matter where you anchor so long at you can hit that same point every time.

Second, back tension. More exactly keeping back tension through the whole shot process. Find your "second anchor point".

Third, smooth release. Research "deep hook". Focus on relaxing the back of your hand versus letting go of the string.

Forth, aiming system. Whether it using the point of the arrow or whatever, research Gap Shooting, Split Vision, Instinctive, etc. Give them all an honest try and find which one works best for you.

Like BhamFred said, start with blind bale focusing on anchor point, back tension, and smooth release. Pull with your back muscles not your bicep. Think of pushing your elbow through a wall behind you. Feel the shoot. Ask question because you don't know what you don't know. Have fun.

I've gained a lot of information from Tradgang.com. Great place to ask questions at all levels.
