Got one I need to pickup from the processor here in SC and rolling to Mizzou next week. That ought to fill up the freezer for a year. It’s a little easier to fill the freezer only having to feed myself and my gf from time to time. For those with families I could see where 4-5 deer wouldn’t last but a year or so.

Progress report for me too - We didn't previously eat a ton of venison but put 4 in the freezer last year and now have less than a half of one left. Pretty pleased with that.

Venison is the most expensive meat in our freezer. The fillets and rib-eyes from baby show calves don’t cost nearly as much

I dont think folks necessarily mean "fill the freezer". They mean to put enough in the freezer to get through the year. If it were everybody's goal to fill the freezer, that would be easy. Just buy a smaller freezer.. I dont know how many it would take for my family of 4 to eat venison for most every meal. 4 deer usually let's me eat venison 2-3 times a week for the whole year. Put up 3 last year and had to raid my brother's freezer a month ago. With ground beef $5-6 a pound, really helps with the grocery bill too.

I understand what people mean by this, but last year I killed 3 on land that I hunted for free, with a bow that I've owned for 4-5 years now, without having to buy new arrows, and processed it all myself. There really wasn't any cost other than my license.

Again, I understand why people say it, but it doesn't HAVE to be expensive.

If your time is valuable to anyone (you, your family, your employer, your kids, your spouse) it has to be expensive. If you buy any supplies, bow, tree stand, bullets, arrows, flashlight, binoculars, camera, fuel Hunting is expensive

Ah yeah the time thing is a good point. I guess my point was, if I hunted for 10 years with the same bow and same stand and only had to replace arrows every so often, the gear thing isn't too much. Don't have binoculars, don't use cameras anymore.

I'm not saying it doesn't cost anything, but it also doesn't have to be extremely expensive.
