There is a flat CRP field that I bowhunt every year in Miss that has been there for decades and the deer are usually in predictable spots making it easy to bowhunt. Does anyone hunt the narrow hardwood bottoms in clearcuts? There is a corner that I am going to scout tomorrow to see if there is a good trail to hunt one morning next week. I will give you my opinions after a few hunts. Deer are naturally drawn to edges, variety of food and cover one bound away makes cutover edges a prime location. I'm hunting a select cut now that has 8 yr old pines on one side and natural regrowth cutover with select cutover. Prime spot and deer move thruout the day.

I hunted a new place this weekend, public land, very hard to access. I studied aerials and topos to decide where I wanted to hunt. I settled in on the edge of a cutover, a big treeline between the cutover and a swamp. I found muliple trails out of the swamp and dozens of scrapes and rubs. I spent some time cutting shooting lanes and trimming out a few trees to climb for differing wind directions. I'll be back this weekend.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

Originally posted by BOHNTR: I agree with cartervj. Deer are drawn to edges. Whether it be soft edges (were 2 different types of timber meet) or hard edges (timber/cutover or timber/field). I love hunting cutovers. We have an area that was select cut about 3-4 years ago and they came back this year and took the rest of the trees out. I have hunted this cutover 3 or 4 times this year and have seen no less than 4 deer. The other 2 times I saw 18 one day and 13 another. These deer are coming off of neighboring property (hardwoods) and feeding on the browse in the cutover. Killed a doe on it last Tuesday. Now I'm just waiting on one of the 7 rack bucks that have been visiting. Is this place in Demop?
