The problem is finding a good mechanic. The guy who worked on it for years passed away and I spent months trying to find someone before I had Sunsouth come get it. Plus I have been trying to deal with this from 350 miles away. Wheres the tractor at? Look at it this way you can spend $2k-4k on your tractor and know what you have then, or can spend a little more money and get one just like it but you don't know anything about it and could be spending lots of money on it after you bought it, or you can get a newer one thats smaller and is no where near the tractor like the older john Deere are you might get lucky and find a 2155 john deere for 6k-9k dollars and it'll probably have 4k plus hours on it. If I was you I would build what you got and run it for the next 20years. 5k bucks spread over 20 years is pretty cheap

1) Where is it.
2) What happened to it that made it go from running to needing a rebuild that quick? Did something break? The reason I ask is most tractors of that vintage "need" a rebuild. Did it die in the middle of a food plot or...... what?
3) I wouldn't let Sunsouth wash my tractor let alone work on it. They probably got some 20 year old kid working on it.
4) You are in the hole on it now no matter what. If your mechanical ability doesn't go past 50 piece tool kit in a plastic case then you should probably cut your losses. If you can turn a wrench at all I would keep it. With a rebuild it will be good for another 50 years. You'd get a 1/4 of that service life out of any new tractor on the market don't care which color.

So he's only gonna get 12 1/2 years service out of new tractor , regardless of color? You serious?!

How many hours have you put on a tractor you've owned 2Dogs?
A new 50hp tractor is going to be wore out or... on the way out... after a couple thousand hours. The 2240 in question might run 10k before it needs major work. Might need clutch at some point in that 10k or a pump but that is about it.
If you only put 100 hours a year on a new one it might last you 20 years. You aren't going to use it and it last that long I can assure you of that.

How many hours I put on tractors is irrelevant . I guess we'll have to take a poll in 2031 to see how many 50HP, 2018 tractors are still running. I find it hard to believe nobody makes a 50 ish HP utility tractor , not a compact , that won't run 2,000 hours.

Safe to say the life expectancy of today's tractor ain't near what it was 30 years, or 20 years, ago. I can throw a rock from my front door and hit a dozen old JDs, with more than 10k hours, and still running strong.

I can throw a rock from my front door and hit a dozen old JDs, with more than 10k hours, and still running strong. I used to restore antique JD tractors. Oldest I had was '36 and newest was '58. One of the first things I figured out was they were way over built for the HP and they were simple. A 20 HP tractor had gears, shafts and bearings probably bigger than a 100 HP built today does. When I built an engine I broke it in hooked to a plow.

Why not do it yourself? Take hood off, drain oil and radiator, remove valve cover then head, take oil pan off take bearing caps off, knock pistons out, have machine shop work the head, put it back together, look up torque specs for all bolts that need torquing. It ain't rocket science.

I believe with my whole heart that older tractors (50-100hp machines) are better quality than the late models. I don't have any experience with the larger HP machines so I can't comment, but in my part of the state its common to find 70's or 80's model JD, Case or, Ford still in the hayfield with 8k hours or more.
I am secretly (not telling the wife yet) on the lookout for an older 80's model in the 80 hp range. When I find one I plan to sell either a 06 Kubota or my 2010 JD. No question. We hated to sell an 87 model 2355 but did. Getting to the point we had more than we used. We have an 07 model but won’t buy newer.

Thanks for all the info. I am still trying to figure out what I am gonna do. I had planned on upgrading to a newer tractor with a loader in a few years and am thinking maybe its time to bite the bullet. I have zero mechanical abilities, need a tractor I can depend on when I am up there and realistically would never put more than maybe a 100 hours a year on it, probably less.Beginning to think a new 5055 would look nice with the 6' JD rotary cutter I bought two weeks before my current tractor ceased to function.Based on the what I am seeing on line I can get what I want used for around $20,000 or just say to heck with it and drop a little over $30,000 new. With my luck if I bought used it would run a week and blow the heck up. Under 20k and 4x4 with loader. https://bham.craigslist.org/grd/d/john-deerex4-loader/6724164678.html

That also the advantage series tractors from john deere like the "e" series is now compared to the "m" series. I've got original tires on my 5320 4x4 which is going to be the same year range as that one and has 1090 hrs on it

Wear is also accelerated on those with loaders.
